    Re: La Liga

Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. February 16th. Fifth minute. Taking the ball in his stride down the left channel, the control is instant. He shifts the ball to his right foot and curls expertly past the Getafe goalkeeper to open the scoring. It's the fifth consecutive start in which the Real Madrid man has found the net so there is an air of inevitability to the goal. The only surprise is that this isn't Cristiano Ronaldo but the pretender to his Bernabeu crown. And that's not world record buy Gareth Bale. Jese Rodriguez is the talk of Madrid now.

The 20-year-old Spaniard has long been identified as an exciting talent. After finishing as the second highest goalscorer in Spain's second division with 22 goals for Real Madrid Castilla last term, he captured a wider audience with his displays at the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey in the summer. Five goals in his first four appearances there led to the following description in FIFA's technical report on the tournament: "Dangerous attacker, quick off the mark, good technique, excels in one-on-one situations." Succinct but accurate.

While Barcelona's La Masia is customarily heralded as the premier youth set-up in Spain, Real's La Fabrica also has an impressive record of producing top-flight players - it's just that they rarely progress within the first team. In the past five years, €91 million has been raised from the sales of La Fabrica talent. Full internationals such as Roberto Soldado, Alvaro Negredo and Javi Garcia have passed through its doors without making much of an impression with the senior side. Under Jose Mourinho, there was the potential risk of Jese's career at the Bernabeu going the same way.

Speaking to Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, it is clear that Jese's subsequent emergence is not a surprise to some. "I saw him in the Real Madrid B team and he was their best player last season and the season before," Balague told Sky Sports. "I was surprised Jose Mourinho didn't fancy him because he's very much a Mourinho type of player. But Mourinho seems to be very wary of young players coming through, which is a shame because people can then accuse him of buying players rather than developing them. This is a clear case of someone who was overlooked."

Time is of the essence for youngsters at Real. "Ask any coach that Real Madrid has ever had," Balague told Revista de La Liga viewers. "If you want to be a young player breaking into the first team then make sure you are breaking the door down. I think he's done that." Of that there can be no doubt. Firstly, there was the late consolation goal after coming on as a substitute in El Clasico. Following his first introduction to a game before the hour mark, he responded with two assists against Almeria. Then came a late winner in a 3-2 victory against Valencia in the Mestalla.

Finally, coach Carlo Ancelotti gave Jese the chance of a start against Osasuna in the Copa del Rey and the player delivered with a goal. Opportunities are now coming in La Liga and -typically - they are being seized in spectacular fashion. No teething problems and no cautious play when thrown in alongside the big names. There is not even any sign of the hot and cold streaks one might expect to be a feature of the early appearances of a young winger. In fact, Jese scored in six of his first seven starts for Real Madrid. The other? He provided the assist for Angel Di Maria's strike.

So far this season Jese has had to make do with cameo appearances and has only completed the full 90 minutes on three occasions, scoring each time. But if his current form can be reproduced over a longer period, the statistics are exciting. His goals per 90 minutes record is superior to Bale's with only seven players in the entire country boasting a better record - and that includes the likes of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Then there are assists. In this regard, Jese's 'per 90' record is actually superior to Ronaldo and Messi. And Neymar. And Xavi. In fact, among players with four assists or more, only Bale is setting up a team-mate with such regularity. Madridistas are becoming accustomed to such interventions. "Jese isn't a surprise anymore," Ancelotti recently told reporters. "He is already an important player for us and he is playing well."

    Comparisons

Such is the excitement surrounding Jese's performances that comparisons with the greats are inevitable. It has been pointed out that Real Madrid's all-time top goalscorer Raul netted 10 in his debut season - Jese already has eight. But it is the comparison with current Real heroes that is particularly intriguing. That confidence and panache cutting in from the left, brings to mind the swaggering brilliance that Ronaldo has exhibited to the world time and again over the past decade.

"He's a little bit like Cristiano Ronaldo," Balague admits. "He's very quick in the first five to 10 metres but he can also maintain his speed for long runs which is lethal for defenders. He's also a great finisher and that's something that he can obviously develop too. It helps to have a good technique - which he has - but there is also that instinct that you're born with.

"In any case, he's a player who can only grow. He's very confident, bordering on arrogance - hence the comparison with Ronaldo. I think in small spaces his technique is better than Ronaldo. Obviously, Ronaldo is much superior in his physique and his goalscoring with both feet and his head, but Jese can certainly get to a very high level.

"I don't know whether he can get to the Ronaldo level eventually, as Jese himself has suggested when he said he wanted to be in the top three in the Ballon d'Or within four years. It's a good attitude but I'm not sure he's got it in him because what takes Ronaldo there is a hunger to continuously improve and a physique that helps him with the brand of football that Real Madrid plays. Jese is not that big but he's got a lot of other attributes."

    Political

Against Schalke on Wednesday, Ronaldo's returns from the three-match suspension that helped Jese enjoy an extended run in the team. As a result, the youngster returns to the bench. But is there not a case for his inclusion ahead of Bale? "The Real Madrid team is a little bit political at times," adds Balague. "Bale has produced similar stats to Jese and that has pushed some to say that Jese should be in the line-up. But the president will want Bale in the line-up and if Bale's stats are similar to Jese then he's not doing too badly.

"Jese is better than Bale at the same age. Progression is what takes you to where Bale is at the moment. The stats are similar but the difference is that Jese knows the club well and did not have a difficult pre-season. Let's see what happens next year. I think Bale will still be superior to Jese both in the eyes of the coach and the stats. But in two or three years, I envisage a progression that could equal Bale."

Equalling Bale effectively means that Real Madrid had a potential €100 million man lurking in their reserves all along. Even if he is on the sidelines in Gelsenkirchen this week, with Real competing on three fronts, he will have a significant part to play this season and beyond. Ballon d'Or glory might seem a way off, but... Better technique than Ronaldo? Better than Bale at the same age? All the indications so far suggest that the goal is not unattainable.

Barcelona will reportedly try to sign Bayern Munich forward, Thomas Müller during the summer transfer window and while it has received the all-clear from new president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, the reigning Bundesliga champions are unwilling to entertain any offers for their star player.

According to German newspaper, Sport Bild, Barcelona are keen to add dynamics to their attack and the versatile 24-year-old fits the bill, as he’s able to play on the wings, as a midfielder or even up front as a striker, should the need arise.

The report goes on to state that Bartomeu “has given his approval to begin negotiations with the player,” while Bayern sports director, Matthias Sammer has immediately shot down any chance of Müller leaving the club before his current contract expires in 2017.

“We’ll pay no mind to offers that come from Spain and England, all offers will bounce right back off our doorstep. He’s one of the stars of our team and we will walk together for many years.”

Müller has also been linked with moves to Real Madrid and English Premier League side, Manchester United.

‘Avenida Luis Aragonés’ to pave the way to Atletico Madrid’s new ‘La Peineta’ stadium

Atletico Madrid players and staff were on hand to catch their first glimpses at their new 68,000 to 72,000 seat La Peineta stadium, which is set to open ahead of the 2016, but Madrid Mayor Ana Botella had a special announcement about one particular area surrounding the stadium.

“The main avenue to the new stadium (La Peineta) will be named after Luis Aragonés.”

Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo stepped up and praised the decision to name the street after the recently deceased Atleti legend and wouldn’t dare give his prediction about this weekend’s derby against Real Madrid.

“It will be good, I don’t know if we’ll see good football, but there will be sportsmanship. We are really looking forward to facing Real Madrid, the league leaders. We’re not think about the Copa del Rey, For those that say we are deflated, buy us an air pump…our primary goal has always been to be in the top four and we no long have a problem in achieving that.”

Iker Casillas sets Spanish football record with 952 minutes without conceding a goal

Real Madrid goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, despite not being the first choice keeper this season, has broke a Spanish football record after going 952 minutes without conceding a goal, topping former Atletico Madrid keeper, Abel Resino’s mark of 924 minutes set in 1990-91.

In the 91st minute Wednesday evening’s Champions League tie against Schalke, Casillas’ former teammate, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in the 91st minute to break the 32-year-old’s run that has been going since November 2013, but will go down in history adding yet another notch in the belt of Casillas’ storied career.

In a completely different record, Resino’s record in La Liga still stands at 1275 minutes without conceding a goal (but conceded a goal in the Copa del Rey at the 924 minute mark), something that doesn’t look to be beaten by Casillas, as he no longer plays La Liga matches.

In what has been a year of highs and lows, Casillas can take solace in the fact that, at least in one category, he is the best Spanish goalkeeper of all-time.

Ambulance strike leaves Athletic Bilbao without emergency care

An ambulance strike in Bilbao will leave this evening’s match between Athletic Bilbao and Granada without emergency medical care, should an injury take place on the pitch.

Union organisers have sent a letter to Athletic Bilbao president, Josu Urrutia that due to the violation of fundamental rights, there will be no access to emergency vehicles, while also threatening the club by stating that a crowd of the size expected to take in Friday evening’s match without proper emergency medical care “could be considered unlawful.”

The union has called for strikes for Friday, Monday the 3rd of March and Friday the 7th of March.

The union is striking in protest of a wage reduction of 12.36% last July when companies were allowed to contract with the state.

Grande: Casillas is still the best

Spanish national team assistant manager, Toni Grande recently praised captain and Real Madrid stopper, Iker Casillas, stating that despite not playing in La Liga matches anymore, Casillas is still their best choice.

In an interview with Sefutbol.com, Grande sang Casillas’ praises and stressed his importance as a captain.

“He is our captain and Spain’s best keeper by a mile. He’s just another player, but let’s not forget, he’s still Iker Casillas.”

Grande then spoke about the upcoming 2014 World Cup and the challenges they’ll face.

“It’s going to be a very demanding tournament. We’ll have to be even more focused this time. We know that repeating what we did in South Africa is going to be very hard. We were drawn in a tough group. We already know [Brazil after] what happened at the Confederations Cup. They took the game to us. They were better on the day and had more to lose than us.

“Within the team’s conduct there is a democracy. The captains and the most experienced players have the greatest voice within the team. We’ve seen how the other players listen to them and the system works.”

A new addition to that dressing room is Brazilian-born Spanish citizen, Diego Costa, who will join the squad for the first time in next week’s friendly against Italy.

“He has burst onto the scene with enormous power and energy, as well as a keen eye for goal. His movement on the pitch gives a team the space in needs to open up the opposition. We had very few doubts about him.”

AVB: Coaching Barca or Madrid would be a dream come true

André Villas-Boas admits that it would be a “dream come true” to coach either Barcelona or Real Madrid some day, and revealed he will be in management come the start of next season.

03 Villas-BoasThe Portuguese coach was sacked twice in the Premier League, by Chelsea in 2012 and Tottenham last December, and feels he still has a lot to learn, but has the ambition of managing one of Spain’s big two in the future, while also hinting that he could return to the dugout soon, possibly in La Liga

“They are the best two clubs in the world. One has the most trophies and the other has set the bar in recent years. The legacy Guardiola left behind is incredible. For a young coach like me, training either one would be a dream come true. I’d like to coach in other leagues, start over again and get to know different countries. I have already been in contact with various clubs and I will no doubt be coaching again in June, if not before.”

‘AVB’ was the last manager to coach Gareth Bale before the Welsh international made the €100 million switch from Spurs to Real Madrid last summer, and is impressed with the way his former player is adapting to his new surroundings in the Spanish capital,

“He is doing very well. He knows that this is one of the biggest challenges of his career. Coming to Madrid was his decision, there were many offers but he had the necessary ambition to sign for the club with the most trophies.”

The ex-Porto boss brought Spanish international Roberto Soldado to White Hart Lane last summer, for £26 million, from Valencia. The striker has found it difficult to embrace English football, netting just 10 goals, while also experiencing problems with communication. Villas-Boas understands it will be difficult for Soldado to be selected for the World Cup, but is hoping the forward makes it to Brazil,

“Roberto hasn’t got it easy, but I hope he can go. He’s a great player and an even greater person but he hasn’t been picked for the last few matches.”
