Nuevo San Mames lighting test leads to spectacular show in Bilbao

The Nuevo San Mames has been widely praised for it’s fantastic design and spectacular feel, but the most eye-catching aspect of the new home to Athletic Bilbao is the fiber optics surrounding the exterior, something that was on display earlier this week.

On Monday evening, the club and city chose to test the true power of their stadium by testing the exterior lighting in what turned out to be a fantastic light show.

Enjoy the modern marvel of Bilbao.

The uncle of Athletic Club Bilbao midfielder Mikel Rico was watching their morning training session at the Lezama training complex, when he suffered a sudden heart-attack.

There were tense moments at Lezama as Athletic Club Bilbao trained as normal this morning, when the uncle of central midfielder Mikel Rico, who was watching from the small stands at the side of the training pitch, suffered a sudden heart-attack.

Athletic Club Bilbao medics save the life of Mikel Rico's uncleMikel Rico’s father quickly alerted staff of the situation, to which the Athletic medical staff responded rapidly and with clarity of mind. Medics Paco Angulo, Hosean Lekue and Juan Manuel Ipiña spent around 20 minutes applying cardiac massage, before stabilising his condition ahead of the arrival of an ambulance, whereupon he was taken to hospital.

Training was understandably disrupted, with Mikel Rico clearly upset by what was happening, as the medical staff attempted to revive his uncle, but was accompanied by manager Ernesto Valverde.

Later reports from the hospital indicated that he was in a stable condition, thanks to the swift actions of the Athletic medical team.

7th place in La Liga earns a Europa League spot thanks to El Clasico Copa del Rey final

The ‘El Clasico’ final between Real Madrid and Barcelona opens up a spot for the seventh place La Liga side a qualifying place in next year’s Europa League.

Real Madrid and Barcelona will play in the final of the Copa del Rey, with the winner being guarenteed a spot in the Europa League, however, considering both clubs will undoubtedly be in the Champions Leauge next season, the abandoned Europa League spot doesn’t fall to the semi-finalists, say Real Sociedad, but to La Liga.

Therefore, the club who finishes in seventh place in La Liga will benefit from the El Clasico final and earn a spot in next season’s European competition.

The scenario was the same last season, as Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid played in the final, but due to the sanctions of Malaga and Rayo, it fell to the ninth place Sevilla.

As it stands now, both Sevilla and Valencia share the 7th place spot in La Liga, but will face each other this weekend.

Atletico Madrid have been fined £492 after Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo was struck on the head with a cigarette lighter.

Ronaldo was leaving the pitch at half-time during Tuesday's Copa del Rey semi-final at Atletico's Vicente Calderon when he was hit by the object.

It was thrown from the crowd after the 29-year-old had scored two penalties to help Real advance to the final.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said it was an "isolated" incident.

They added that the fine would have been halved had Atletico been able to identify the person responsible for throwing the lighter.

Ronaldo, who had been booked shortly before half-time, was not seriously injured and was able to play on, although he was eventually substituted 15 minutes from the end of the game.

Real Madrid won 5-0 on aggregate and will face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final.

                              Elche 0-0 Osasuna:

All square as Coro sends a penalty into the clouds

Visiting Osasuna looked the more composed of the two sides for most of the game, but Elche had the best chance of the night from the penalty spot, only for Coro to send it sailing over the crossbar.

Elche were keen to get off to a good start in front of their home fans, but stubborn as ever at the back, Osasuna were proving very robust against the attacks from the home side in the opening minutes of the game at the Martínez Valero.

Having stood up to those early tests of their rearguard, it was Osasuna who then had the first real chance of the game in the 5th minute of play. Oriol Riera latched onto a great forward ball from Armenteros, but though he managed to get his shot on target, it was straight towards Toño in the Elche goal.

After a spell of good work and pressing from Osasuna, the next chance of the game fell for Elche in the 11th minute. Manu del Moral with the cross from the right and just as Cristian Herrera stretched to apply the finishing touch, Bertrán made a timely interception, clearing the ball out for a corner.

Elche began to dominate, throwing more into their attacking, with Osasuna taking absolutely no risks whatsoever at the back, with good challenges and clearances anywhere upfield or out into touch, so long as it kept the ball away from their area. When eventually the home side did get a shot through in the 16th minute, with Coro taking a pop at goal, it was well held by Andrés.

Having not taken any advantage of their spell of pressure, the pendulum swung in Osasuna’s favour as they began to enjoy more of the ball. Roberto Torres latched onto a forward ball that would have seen him clean through on goal in the 19th minute, but it got trapped between his feet and he lost control of both the ball and the attacking opportunity. A corner presented the next chance for the visitors in the 21st minute. Lolo made the header as the ball came into the six-yard box, but Toño reacted well to tip that effort over the crossbar.

Still the better chances were coming for Osasuna and another came their way in the 27th minute. The Elche defence were all over the place as Lolo found Roberto Torres available in the area, he played the ball to Oriol Riera in space to shoot, that was blocked and all Cejudo had to do was shoot first time on the rebound, but delaying to angle his effort, the chance was gone as he ended up losing the ball to a challenge.

Around the half-hour mark, at last Elche saw another opportunity, this time from a corner. Carlos Sánchez with a good header, but just a fraction over the crossbar. From there and towards the interval, play swung in both directions, though with Osasuna seemingly the most comfortable with the ball.

Just before half-time, Elche players and fans were calling for a penalty as the ball struck the arm of Loties inside his area, but referee Hernández Hernández wasn’t interested and perhaps quite fairly for what looked an involuntary action by the Osasuna defender.

Just as they had started the first half, so Elche started the second with the attacking pressure in the opening moments. Osasuna were alert at the back though and in the 46th minute, Loties timed his interception to perfection as Cristian Herrera was ready to burst clean through on goal, following a good ball from the back.

Osasuna then pushed forward and in the 48th minute, Roberto Torres firing powerfully on the half-volley from the edge of the area, with Toño not risking a catch with the ball spinning, punching it away instead. Botía then on top form to intercept at the back for Elche in the 51st minute, as Osasuna sought to squeeze a killer pass through into the area behind him, with Oriol Riera lurking with intent.

Following an Elche corner that saw plenty of pushing and shoving inside the area, clearly the referee spotted something he didn’t like from the Osasuna players back to defend in the 60th minute. Calling play to a halt, Lolo was presented with a yellow card and the home side were awarded a penalty. A harsh decision felt the visiting players, but when the resulting spot-kick was skied over the crossbar by Coro, they felt they had justice and Elche had missed a fantastic opportunity to take the advantage.

Still the home side pushed though and in the 65th minute, another opportunity as Cisma floated in a cross from the left, Manu del Moral made the headed connection, but just over the crossbar. Following that, the first changes arrived from the benches. Osasuna first in the 68th minute, as Lobato came on for Armenteros. Seconds later, Elche followed suit with Aarón replacing Fidel.

As play became more open, there were half chances at either end, as Osasuna and Cejudo had an effort blocked by Botía, then Aarón for Elche saw his shot from distance claimed comfortably by Andrés.

After Osasuna made their second change by choice, with Loé on for Lolo, Elche then had to make a forced substitution in the 77th minute, with goalkeeper Toño hurt and unable to continue. He was replaced between the posts by Many Herrera.

The Elche substitute keeper was soon put to the test in the 79th minute, as Osasuna surged forward, Bertrán slotting the ball back to Silva, with his shot taking a deflection off Carlos Sánchez, but Manu Herrera able to readjust himself to tip the ball wide.

After more pressure from Osasuna which Elche managed to resist, more changes from the touchline with five minutes left for either team to grab something from the game. Boakye was switched into attack for Cristian Herrera for Elche in the 85th minute, quickly followed by Osasuna, with Nino on for his first action in nine months, replacing Cejudo.

Action at both ends for those final five minutes, plus the four of added time, but still neither side could make the crucial breakthrough and as the whistle blew, a share of the points was all that rewarded the two teams for their efforts.
