Real Betis finally suffered their expected relegation from the Primera on Saturday and amidst the disappointment, there were whistles throughout the game for striker Rubén Castro, who’s future at the club is increasingly in doubt.
Stuck at the bottom for much of the season, three managers couldn’t save Real Betis from their relegation to the Segunda, which was confirmed last Saturday with defeat at home against Real Sociedad.
Throughout the game, Rubén Castro was one of the players singled out by fans, who showed their discontent for what has been a disastrous season. Perhaps that criticism for a player who has been so talismanic in recent years, was a little unfair, given that his own season has been plagued by injuries.
Much has been the speculation about the futures of several Betis players, now that the team are heading to the Segunda. Obviously the club will need to cut its cloth according to the big difference in income, having fallen from the Primera. At the top of the list of those rumoured to be leaving, is Rubén Castro.
According to AS, amidst strong interest in the striker from various countries, Rubén Castro would have a preference to remain in the Primera and regional rivals Málaga are ready to swoop. A fee of up to €3 million could be gained from his sale, with the claim that Los Boquerones are already planning to make their move, at the end of the season. That he will celebrate his 33rd birthday in June and having had fitness problems this season, doesn’t seem to have reduced the level of interest.
Throughout the season however, even with Real Betis seemingly always destined to lose their battle against relegation, Rubén Castro himself has stated on more than one occasion, he would have no problems playing with the club in the Segunda.
That decision though, could be out of his hands. As one of the top earners, unless he was to take a significant drop in salary to remain, it does seem more and more likely that he’ll be one of the first players out the door, as the club restructures the team to meet new budgetary requirements of playing at a lower category.
