We are writting in the books Post about A Confederancy of Dunces. Sherry Darling and myself are reading this book and making comments.

Does anyone know the exact translation for dunces?

( Can it be like a "friqui"?)

We are looking for more people to read and write about this book.

This is a short text from the web:

A green hunting cap squeezed the top of the fleshy balloon of a head. The green earflaps, full of large ears and uncut hair and the fine bristles that grew in the ears themselves, stuck out on either side like turn signals indicating two directions at once. Full, pursed lips protruded beneath the bushy black moustache and, at their corners, sank into little folds filled with disapproval and potato chip crumbs. In the shadow under the green visor of the cap Ignatius J. Reilly's supercilious blue and yellow eyes looked down upon the other people waiting under the clock at the D.H. Holmes department store, studying the crowd of people for signs of bad taste in dress. Several of the outfits, Ignatius noticed, were new enough and expensive enough to be properly considered offenses against taste and decency. Possession of anything new or expensive only reflected a person's lack of theology and geometry; it could even cast doubts upon one's soul.

--from A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole.

I think "dunce" means "stupid" (or something like that)

a person who is slow to learn or stupid, especially at school
I think the best translation is "burro", as Sherry say in the Books' topic.

Ummm, maybe I'll buy the book in english (and read it, of course, hehe).

P.S. Done. In ten days or so I'll receive it.

Well, we have another one Sherry. We must read slow then.

I like more the spanish word "tonto" o "idiota", but right now everyone call this character a "friki".

I am right now at the page 120 Chapter Five, Subchapter IV, just before a writting reflexion. Anyway we can also think about this book in this post so we can improve our english. Where are you from, Jacob?

We need a leader for our Betis.

I have also a post called Kiko Veneno for President although it is a joke.

From Seville, although I have lived a few years in Madrid. Maybe for this reason I find difficult to consider myself "sevillano". You know, I can't understand the lack of interest in learning a foreign language, typical of the sevillanos. I wish my city would be more cosmopolitan. But anyway, is one of the better places to live I know.

And please don't slow down your reading of the book, I don't mind if you comment the whole book before I have read it.

About the meaning of the word "friki", I'll be glad if we discuss it later, right now my niece and nephew wants to use the computer (damn kids...).

Sherry or gui could give you a proper information of the book, but as far as I know is one of the best novels os the past century. Two links with more information:

                          John Kennedy Toole (Wikipedia)
                          La conjura de los necios

I don't have any great thoughts for the tonight's game. I hope that our team will win, but I believe that we are touching the Hell with our fingers. Too near. And is a big trouble. I really want a victory.
