CD Tenerife are the subject of advanced negotiations, from a group of German investors, who are willing to make a sizeable investment in the club, whilst also improving the infrastructure of the former Primera side. Talks have currently stalled however, according to former defender, César Gómez.
During the 1990′s, CD Tenerife enjoyed a decade in the Primera and even reached the semi-finals of the UEFA CUP, before the competition was re-branded as the UEFA Europa League.
Following their relegation at the end of the 1998-1999 season and aside for two very brief returns, the most recent for one season in the 2009-2010 campaign, the club has spent most of its time in the Segunda, even dropping to the Segunda B for two seasons.
Back in the Segunda, CD Tenerife secured a creditable 11th position finish in the league and now, the club has attracted the attention of foreign investors.
According to local reports in the Canary Islands holiday resort city, a German investment group has been in talks for some time, about the possibility of securing a takeover. During these talks, it was even suggested that they could make an immediate cash loan offer, to help the club avoid having to sell striker Ayoze Pérez, who moved to Newcastle United at the end of the season.
Current president Miguel Concepción has so far been reluctant to see the club sold to the German investment group. However, on Monday the public face of the investment group, former CD Tenerife defender César Gómez, who played for the club during their golden years, explained that it was a “huge” opportunity for the team to get back where he feels they belong: In the Primera.
Gómez expressed disappointment, that having been close to an agreement, with the team pushing for the promotion play-off places towards the end of the season, club president Concepción seemed less willing and backed away.
This he feels was a shame, as the German investors have so far expressed a willingness to back up their proposals, by presenting funds of around €30 million with a notary, in order to fulfil their move and wipe clear all debts at the club. They also want to invest in the infrastructure of the club, the stadium and the training facilities, to match their ambitions of taking the side back to the Primera.
Although the option for further negotiations remain open, Gómez admitted that whilst participating in most recently in talks with club president Miguel Concepción and board member Corviniano Clavijo, he got the distinct impression that the latter is trying to position himself as future president of CD Tenerife, therefore the real voice behind rejection of the investment group’s proposals, thus far.
Whether these German investors will patiently continue to promote their interests and keep pushing for the purchase of CD Tenerife, now remains to be seen and hangs in the balance.
