Seydou Keita scores fastest goal in La Liga history

Valencia defensive midfielder, Seydou Keita stated in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, that all he wanted to do before the end of the season was to score his first goal with Valencia….This man sure knows how to predict his own future.

Just 7.6 seconds into Thursday evening’s match against Almeria, Keita fired a shot past Esteban to score the fastest goal in, not only Valencia history, but the fastest goal in the history of La Liga.

FIFA rules state that the clock doesn’t start ticking at the referee’s whistle, but the first touch, which means Keita scored his goal in 7.6 seconds rather than the original time of 8.5 seconds.

Keita’s goal beats out previous record-holder, Joseba Llorente, who scored in 7.8 seconds on 20th January 2008.

Ketia also beats out previous Valencia record holder, Diarte, who scored in 10 seconds on 4th December 1977.

Granada 0-2 Levante: Pedro López golazo seals vital win for Levante

Granada spent most of the game attacking and inside the Levante half, but simply couldn’t find a way through. The visitors made the most of their opportunities when they broke forward, with strikes at the start and the finish of the second half.

Plenty of pressure from Granada in the opening stages of the game, but Levante kept themselves very well organised and tight, with their two banks of four in midfield and defence.

Finding space and openings was difficult for Granada, who looked to take the initiative, whilst Levante let them have the ball and waited for errors, so they could hit quickly on the break. In the 11th minute though, a cross from the Granada left looked like it was handled by one of the Levante defenders. Initially the referee pointed to the spot, but amidst the protests and confusion, he changed his mind, even though none of the linesmen were clearer sighted than he was.

The game remained tight as the two sides continued with their game plan, of Granada looking to pass their way through and Levante remaining tight at all times. Eventually Levante broke forward and the ball fell for Ivanschitz to take a pop from the edge of the area in the 24th minute, but wide of the mark and never troubling the Granada keeper.

Right on the half-hour mark, Granada got a lucky break as the ball broke for El Arabi inside the area. The Moroccan strike turned his man well and fired at goal, but straight into the hands of Keylor Navas. In the 32nd minute, a free-kick for Levante would present their next chance. Ivanschitz again to strike low across the surface, but easily gathered by Roberto.

Heading towards the interval, Levante had their best chance of the game as the ball broke free for Rubén García to strike powerfully at goal, but somehow Roberto managed to react with a reaction hand, tipping the shot onto the crossbar and out for a corner.

No more chances for either side in the final five minutes of the half though, as play tightened up once more and neither side really deserving of a lead.

Out for the second half, Levante were quickest out the blocks. A free-kick in the 47th minute from Ivanschitz caused the Granada defence problems to clear. Barral got a touch and the ball bobbled through for Navarro, who prodded the ball towards goal. Roberto got a hand to it, but not enough to stop it nestling into the back of the net.

Levante midfielder Rubén García could have doubled the lead in the 51st minute. His shot from just inside the Granada half, agonisingly just over the crossbar, after he spotted keeper Roberto off his line.

In the 60th minute, Granada were furious after a two-footed lunge on Murillo from Barral. The referee had the red card in his hand, but ultimately produced a yellow for the Levante striker. Granada made their first chance straight after that, as Buonanotte replaced Recio. Three minutes later, the home side were further angered when a soft free-kick was awarded against them, though it came to nothing in the end for Levante, as Diop fired over the crossbar.

Levante made their first change of the game in the 66th minute, as Pedro López replaced Rubén García & Caparrós shuffled the shape of his team to have five at the back. Granada followed suit with an attacking change in the 69th minute, with Piti on for Nyom.

Granada pushed hard for an equaliser and in the 71st minute, had a great chance to level the game. Brahimi found space to shoot, but his effort deflected through to El Arabi, who stuck out a boot and somehow managed to prod the ball over the crossbar, from right on the six-yard line.

The long spell of pressure continued for Granada, but they simply couldn’t find a way through, as Levante sat back and protected their area, often with six at the back as a central midfielder dropped deeper as a stopper. The visitors made their second change in the 76th minute, with Rodas on for Ivanschitz.

There was no way through as Granada insisted, with the ball in the Levante half and the visitors camped with their five defenders and four midfielders on the edged of their area. After Iturra fired a shot from distance over in the 82nd minute, Granada made their final change, a straight swap in attack with Ighalo on for El Arabi.

All in the Levante half, a deep ball into the area almost presented another opportunity for the home side, but neither Ighalo or Riki could reach the header as they played head-tennis with the visiting defence, before Keylor Navas came out to claim. Straight up at the other end, Levante countered will in the 84th minute, but Barral couldn’t make the most of his chance and Roberto saved low. That was the last chance for the Levante striker as in the 86th minute, Babá replaced Barral.

In the 87th minute, Levante sprung their counter once more, as a Granada attack broke down. Pedro López picked up the ball on the edge of the area, lifted his head and fired a superb finish in off the post. The killer blow struck by the visitors.

Piti tried his best to pull a goal back for Granada in the 89th minute, but it whizzed just wide. Granada were having no lucky breaks at all. No more chances in the four minutes of stoppage time and Levante grabbed themselves a highly valuable three points. A missed opportunity for the home side, from a game that they were looking at as a step closer to permanence.
