Barcelona lost ground on arch rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish title race after a deserved loss at Real Sociedad.

Needing victory to move level with Real, who won earlier in the day, Barca trailed when Alex Song headed into his own goal shortly after the half hour.

The visitors levelled within four minutes as Lionel Messi fired a precise 18-yard shot into the bottom corner.

Antoine Griezmann slid Sociedad ahead again after the break before turning provider for David Zurutuza to prod in.

It was a disappointing display by defending champions Barca, who started the weekend on top of La Liga with a superior goal difference over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

But Real moved three points clear after a 3-0 home win against Elche earlier on Saturday which left the Catalans playing catch up.

Barcelona rested a host of key players following Tuesday's Champions League win at Manchester City, but the move did not pay off as Gerardo Martino's men produced a sloppy display which lacked fluency and any genuine attacking threat.

After a first-half display where his team dominated possession without creating the better opportunities, Martino's frustration boiled over at the interval and he was ordered to watch the second half from the stands by referee David Fernandez.

Barcelona's defeat means they have not beaten Real Sociedad in San Sebastian in their last five attempts. The Catalans' last win there came in 2006-07, when goals from Andres Iniesta and Samuel Eto'o earned them a 2-0 win.

His side had gone behind when Cameroon midfielder Song, under pressure from Sociedad midfielder Gorka Elustondo, sent Sergio Canales's pinpoint right-wing cross flying past Barca keeper Victor Valdes.

The visitors were quickly level when Argentine superstar Messi deftly controlled a square pass before smashing his 25th goal of the season past home keeper Claudio Bravo.

But they were fortunate not to already be further behind after former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela missed a host of chances for the Basque side.

If Martino was already unhappy, then his mood further darkened as Sociedad took control in the space of five minutes before the hour mark.

After a high tempo start to the second half, the hosts deservedly regained the lead when Vela pounced on a stray header before squaring to Griezmann for his 15th goal of the season.

The France Under-21 winger then picked out Zurutuza, who was allowed a free run into the Barca area from deep before bravely poking past the onrushing Valdes.

Barca rarely threatened to produce a dramatic fightback as Sociedad, who have not been beaten in the Catalans' last five visits to San Sebastian, moved up to fifth.

Atletico could also move three points clear of Barca, with 13 games remaining, if they manage to beat Osasuna on Sunday.

Re: Jornada 25 - Primera division

Barcelona suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at Real Sociedad, allowing Real Madrid to open up a three-point lead at the top of the Primera Liga with a 3-0 victory over Elche.

Barcelona headed into their game with Sociedad full of confidence after a Champions League win at Manchester City, but they were beaten in the corresponding fixture last term and endured another miserable trip to the Anoeta.

The hosts went ahead in the 32nd minute when Gorka Elustondo's header found the net via the shoulder of visiting defender Alex Song.

Lionel Messi equalised four minutes later with a typically clinical finish, but further home goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half - scored by Antoine Griezmann and David Zurutuza - ensured the Primera Division champions left San Sebastian empty-handed for the third time in four seasons.

Earlier in the day, Gareth Bale scored an outstanding long-range goal as Real Madrid beat Elche at the Bernabeu.

The world's most expensive player added to Asier Illaramendi's first-half opener with a stunning strike on 71 minutes, and then substitute Isco hit a third with 10 minutes remaining.

Although Madrid never hit top gear, they pulled off their 10th home win of the season to keep the pressure on title rivals Barca and Atletico Madrid, who play on Sunday.

Getafe remain in trouble near the bottom of the Primera Division after drawing 1-1 at Celta Vigo, but did well to pick up a point after playing the majority of the second half with 10 men.

Angel Lafita gave Luis Garcia's side the lead after 20 minutes but Getafe failed to cling onto their advantage and made things easier for Celta when Lisandro Lopez was shown a second yellow card early in the second half, shortly after which Rafinha equalised.

The day's late game pitted together two sides just above the drop zone in Almeria and Malaga, and there was nothing to choose between them in a goalless draw at the Juegos Mediterraneos.

                    Rayo Vallecano 0-1 Sevilla:

Coke refreshes the fortunes of Sevilla

Sunday’s mid-day La Liga encounter was a slow starter, with neither team able to claim control in the first period. Things livened up in the second half, as Coke broke the deadlock for Sevilla, who then defended their way to victory against Rayo Vallecano, even with ten men towards the end, as the home side threw everything forward without success.

Rayo Vallecano v SevillaVisiting Sevilla took the early initiative at Vallecas, but without causing any real threats on the Rayo goal in the opening ten minutes of the game. As the game progressed, though both sides looked for openings, Rayo trying to control possession, whilst Sevilla pressed and looked to counter, there were still few scoring opportunities.

In the 22nd minute though, Rayo almost scored by accident, as Tito fired in what was intended to be a cross, but actually went closer to going in. Beto in the Sevilla goal, thankful when the ball was eventually cleared, because he was nowhere near it.

Sevilla pushed forwards themselves and forced their opponents to concede corners, but customarily dangerous from such set-pieces, they were unable to encounter any mistakes from the Rayo defence, who dealt with them well. The first real chance for the visitors coming from Pareja though, after one of those corners had been half-cleared in the 29th minute, but his low drive whizzed just wide of the post.

As the two sides huffed and puffed without blowing either’s house down, eventually in the 38th minute, Sevilla did have the ball in the back of the net. The flag was raised though and the goal ruled out, after Bacca had strayed just offside before he made the final connection.

Play continued to swing from one end to the other for the remaining minutes of the half, but littered with imprecisions when it came to making the telling final pass or shot.

Out for the second half, Rayo had more of the possession, but when Lass made himself a good chance in the opening minute, his finish from outside the area was poor. As the minutes passed though, both sides seemed to be struggling to get any sort of moves together for a spell.

Eventually Rakitic started pulling the strings for Sevilla and after a good combination with both Bacca and Iborra, the final shot at goal was well stopped by Rayo keeper Rubén in the 53rd minute. A warning from the visitors, but the home side a few tricks up their sleeves too and in the 55th minute, with a nice move as Falque teed up Viera with the goal at his mercy, only for him to blast it over the crossbar.

That was seemingly enough for Rayo manager Paco Jémez, who promptly reshuffled things from the bench, with Adrían and Larrivey coming on to replace Baena and Bueno in the 56th minute, looking to inspire a positive change for his side. Quite the opposite however, because in the 57th minute, Sevilla took the lead. A free-kick taken flank side of the area was sent in by Rakitic, with Coke forward to lose his marker and head into the back of the net.

Sevilla were now looking reinforced by their goal and Rayo we’re on the ropes. Rakitic was the shining light for his side, looking to craft more openings. With no real joy for Rayo going forward, Jémez went for broke in the 66th minute, taking of Rat and opting for three at the back, with Italian striker Longo on as his replacement. Sevilla meanwhile, were looking just as strong with their two lines of four, stoutly defending anything that the home side could throw at them.

In the 71st minute, Sevilla made their first change of the game, with Jairo replaced by Diogo. That was followed by a flurry of chances. First Diogo with his first action since coming off the bench, striking from distance, but without accuracy in the 71st minute. Then Longo had his first chance of the game for Rayo in the 75th minute, but denied by a great reflex save from Beto. In the following minute and up at the other end, Rakitic then had a great opportunity to kill the game, after Diogo fired in the cross, found the Croatian playmaker free on the far-post, only to strike his first time effort wide.

Emery made another change in the 77th minute, switching strikers as Gameiro came on for Bacca, but there was soon more defending for Sevilla to do. Larrivey unable to control a good ball into the area well enough for Rayo in the 80th minute, as it arrived to him in front of goal, but at a difficult height to get a shot off cleanly.

Iborra was shown his marching orders for Sevilla amidst some confusion in the 82nd minute. With the player heading off the pitch for treatment, seemingly injured, the referee wasn’t happy with the lax way he trudged to the sidelines, promptly producing a second yellow card and the red, for time-wasting.

Rayo had all the possession and effectively all the play in the final moments, but impotently unable to find a way through the fully retreated Sevilla in front of them. As the game headed into stoppage time, the visitors came closest to getting another goal, launching a swift counter that was just as hastily finished by Gameiro, who struck his effort well over the crossbar in the 92nd minute. That was followed by an opportunity to sap more minutes, as Sevilla made their final change, with Trochowski on for Rakitic.

In the final minute of added time, Rayo threw everything forward, won a corner and even keeper Rubén was up there to add some extra pressure, but all to no avail in the end, as Sevilla held firm and claimed all three points.

The poor recent run for Sevilla comes to a winning conclusion, sealing them seventh position in La Liga. In stark contrast, the misery continues for Rayo Vallecano, who remain five points adrift of safety and second from bottom.

Valencia 2-1 Granada: Vezo snatches the points at the death

Valencia had the best of the possession, but couldn’t break down the defence of Granada in the first half, as the visitors looked to counter swiftly and create opportunities of their own. Granada opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half, but Valencia fought back to level the game, then snatched the winner in the final minute of play.

Valencia opened the game with the early pressure at the Mestalla, though Granada were proving resolute at the back and unwilling to allow any spaces to be exploited. The first chance of the game coming from a free-kick for Valencia, to the right side of the Granada area in the 7th minute. Floated in towards the far post, Mathieu was there to make the connection, but couldn’t steer his header on target.

Though Valencia had the majority of the possession, Granada were looking to break forward quickly when they got hold of the ball. In the 9th minute, El Arabi turned his markers twice, before lashing in a powerful shot on target, which took Alves two attempts to fully get under control.

After another spell of pressure from Valencia without end product, against Granada broke forward with a great run from Piti through the middle in the 14th minute, a neat ball forward to Recio into space, but as he fired at goal, his shot was deflected wide for a corner

Valencia still had most of the ball, but though Fede was working well to find openings, still Granada held firm at the back. In the 20th minute though, an unplanned substitution as Fran Rico limped off with a muscle problem, replaced by young Ghanaian midfielder, Fatau.

A battle for possession in midfield was followed on the half-hour mark by more cohesive attacking from Valencia. Fede striking powerfully, but straight into the hands of Roberto. Another chance came for Fede in the 31st minute, striking low this time, but against Roberto was there to make the save for Granada.

In the 33rd minute, after a stray pass from Valencia, Granada broke forward at pace with El Arabi. He slid the ball towards the run of Brahimi, who beat his marker and curled in a shot, but not with quite enough swerve to take it anywhere other than just outside the far post. The good spell continued for Granada and in the 39th minute, Piti did well to beat his man on the left flank, before a slide-rule pass for the run of Fatau, but the young midfielder scuffed his shot wide from the edge of the area.

Valencia then dominated the final moments of the half, but still found it hard to break the stout Granada defending.

The second half began with a reverse of how the first had ended, as Granada quickly went on the attack and in the 46th minute, they took the lead. A cross from the right by Nyom, poorly dealt with by the Valencia defence and Piti was there to snatch the rebound and smash it past Alves.

As Granada continued to attack, Valencia looked shell-shocked, but in the 52nd minute, manager Pizzi made his move from the bench and on came Alcácer for Keita. As the visitors sat back, trying to soak up the pressure, Valencia passed the ball around looking for any openings they could find. Another change came as Jonas replaced Vargas in the 59th minute.

When it looked like the Granada were withstanding the pressure, eventually they were undone by a swift ball into the area from the Valencia right flank, with the substitute Alcácer nipping in to apply the finishing touch in the 63rd minute, looking as though he was just a fraction offside. The goal stood though and the home side were back on level terms.

Valencia kept up the pressure and in the 67th minute, Jonas found space to drive a low shot towards goal, but Roberto was down well to tip wide for a corner. Straight after that, Granada made their second change of the game, as Pereira came on for Brahimi. Still the home side pressed forward, but couldn’t create any openings in the final third of the pitch. Pizzi then made his final change, with Míchel replacing Fede in the 72nd minute.

After a spell of bookings for both sides, for little more than niggly challenges, Granada had a good opportunity when Fatau strode into space to strike powerfully from distance, but not with enough direction to find the beating of Alves in the Valencia goal.

At the other end and as the game headed into the final ten minutes, Alcácer came close once more after a dangerous ball whizzed in from the left, but Robero alert at his near post to save. Granada then made their final change in the 84th minute, with Piti replaced by Foulquier.

Granada went into the final five minutes applying good pressure, but unable to find the key final pass or shot to make the difference. As the clock reached the final minute of normal time, Valencia won a free-kick on their right flank. After a delay, the ball was whipped into the area and there was defender Vezo, who lost his marker and prodded home the winner.

It was far to late for Granada to find a way back as play headed into stoppage time and as the final whistle blew, it was Valencia who had claimed all three points with their dramatic late goal.

                        Referee: González González

Valencia XI: Alves; Barragán, Vezo, Mathieu, Bernat; J.Fuego, Keita (52′); Feghouli, Parejo, Fede (72′); Vargas (59′).

                        Goals: Alcácer (63′), Vezo (90′)

Osasuna 3-0 Atletico Madrid: Atleti served shocker in Pamplona

Atletico Madrid were stunned at El Sadar falling 3-0 to Osasuna, who put in their best performance in many a year to take down the title contenders in what was a memorable night in Pamplona.

AtletiOsasunaAfter their midweek heroics at the San Siro on Tuesday, all eyes were focused on Diego Simeone’s men who started the weekend in 3rd place, with the pressure on to cope with the fatigue and leapfrog Barcelona after the Catalans’ loss to Real Sociedad. Standing in their way a stabilised Osasuna side who have only lost twice in their last 6 league games, plus have already held Barca and Real at home.

And Osasuna did what they do best- make the big teams suffer! At a buzzing and intense El Sadar where the crowd are on top of the players like a bull ring, Atletico felt the heat and were flattened in a nightmare first half which saw the hosts go into the interval 3-0, yes 3-0 in front. Marc Bertran set the tempo early on with a long range effort which Courtois held but this only raised the decibels from the stands. A period of sustained pressure followed, finally paying off with the game’s opening goal six minutes in. Crosses were cleared but only for more corners to be delivered, and one was cleverly flighted to the back post, where Cejudo stood free after everyone else had made the dash to the front post, he waited, took his time and executed the volley perfectly to send the crowd wild. Set-pieces were clearly worked on by Javi Gracia in training this week, they were causing Atleti all sorts of problems, as Mario Suarez made a goal-saving clearance to prevent a second goal moments later. Armenteros almost capatalised from some more quick thinking or poor Atletico defending, but his attempt from a low corner was scuffed. However, on 21 minutes he made no mistake with his next effort, encouraged to shoot as he crept nearer to the box, the Swede unleashed a tremendous swerving drive into the top corner, leaving the capital side with one hell of a mountain to climb. Diego Costa and co. were completely frustrated in attack with no cohesion or final pass to create clear-cut chances, and the one decent opportunity they did carve out after David Villa teed up Costa, was struck just past the post. The main objective from here for the Basques may have been to see the two-goal advantage through until the interval, but instead the home faithful were sent into ecstasy as Damia flashed a cross into the box, despite four Atleti defenders in the penalty area, arriving late to beat them all to it was Roberto Torres, glancing his header past Courtois.

As expected Simeone didn’t hang about bringing on Koke for Mario Suarez at half-time, in fact he introduced Turan and Garcia with 30 minutes remaining in the hope it would spark some life into the visitors, but despite creating some half chances, Osasuna were very comfortable dealing with whatever was thrown at them. Fouls and injuries bringing the game to a brief halt here and there allowed the home side to stay in control, as they sat back, content to hit Atleti on the counter. They weren’t shy to have a pop at goal themselves whenever they made their way up the pitch, as goalscorers Cejudo and Torres had attempts from long range which were off target. Cejudo, who came off to a standing ovation with seven minutes remaining, almost made it 4-0, his shot could only hit the side-netting on this occasion though. Turan, Garcia and Diego Costa all came close for Atletico, Garcia’s acrobatic attempt agonisingly went beyond the far post from Koke’s cross, and Costa barging his way past multiple challenges, blazed his left-foot shot over the bar. Loud and proud, with their scarves and flags waving in the calm Spanish sky, the fans from Pamplona cheered their side over the finishing line, staying after the full-time whistle to take in this historic night.

Simeone: When an opponent is better, like Osasuna were today, I congratulate them

Atletico Madrid manager, Diego Simeone admitted that Osasuna were the better side in 3-0 loss in Pamplona on Sunday evening and congratulated them on the win.

In his post-match press conference, Simeone spoke about the shocking loss to Osasuna and how the Pamplona side were able to get the best of the former league leaders.

“In the first 20 minutes Osasuna played well, the had a good game and they surprised us with their first two chances. In the first half, we couldn’t get into the match. In the second half we were better but we couldn’t score the first goal, which would’ve gotten us back into the match.

“When the opponent is better than us, like Osasuna were today, I congratulate them. Other days you are the better team, that’s football.

“Osasuna’s tactics were very good and we weren’t able to play well because of Osasuna’s tactics. In the first 25 minutes, it was their game and we were really bad. We created the first two chances and then Osasuna took over with the ball. In the second half, we raised our level of play and were at least involved in the match. If we lose, I prefer to lose like we played in the second half. “
