Rob Styles: I’m so sorry for penalty blunder

Aug 21 2007 by Martin Ziegler, Liverpool Echo
ROB STYLES has apologised to Liverpool after admitting he was wrong to award a penalty to Chelsea during the 1-1 draw at Anfield.
The match official has accepted he made a mistake in penalising Steve Finnan and as a result he will not be given a match to referee this weekend.
Styles said: “All referees enter into matches hoping not to make any mistakes but understanding that they may happen, what none of us want is for any mistake to potentially affect the result of the match.
“In mistakenly awarding a penalty, I accept that I may have affected the result of the match and for that I apologise.”
Styles awarded Chelsea a penalty which enabled the Blues to equalise even though Finnan appeared to make no contact with Florent Malouda.
Referees’ chief Keith Hackett said officials had to be accountable for mistakes.
He said: “We have in place systems that will analyse each decision a referee makes.
“Referees are aware of the accountability that exists, as are the managers and players, and we expect referees to get big decisions correct.
“On this occasion it was wrong and therefore Rob will not be officiating next weekend.
“I spoke to Rob and obviously he is extremely disappointed with the decision and admitted he got it wrong. I have left a message with Rafael Benitez to apologise.”
Hackett also confirmed another mistake by a match official when assistant referee Ian Gosling did not award Fulham a late goal at home to Middlesbrough when David Healy clearly forced the ball over the line.
He added: “Clearly the assistant referee has made an error, so he won’t be operating next week for us either.”
The Premier League are to press ahead with trials on goal-line technology being developed by the company Hawkeye.
Hackett said: “It is still in its testing stage but we hope when it is judged to be fail-safe then it will be used.
“Everyone in football recognises that goal-line systems can provide help for the referee to make his decision.”
Meanwhile, Hackett will also ensure there is no repeat of the confusion when Styles appeared to book Michael Essien when instead he was still showing the card to John Terry.
Hackett added: “I’m informed by both the fourth official and Rob he retained the card shown to John Terry then held the card to indicate a direct free-kick, and failed to put the card away. So it was a basic, if you like, admin error as against an error in application of law.
“We’ll look at the video to ensure we don’t get a repeat of that.”

Gabriel Heinze loses battle to join Liverpool

Aug 21 2007 By James Pearce, Liverpool Echo
GABRIEL HEINZE has lost his battle to force Manchester United to sell him to Liverpool.
A two-day Premier League inquiry in London has ruled against the Argentina international but that is unlikely to be the end of the matter with the defender now set to appeal against the verdict.
The arbitration panel decided that a letter, signed by chief executive David Gill confirming a sum of £6.8million at which United would be willing to sell, did not constitute a definitive undertaking from the Old Trafford outfit to offload the player.
United said they made it clear to Heinze both orally and by letter that he would not be permitted to join one of their Premiership title rivals.
Heinze had insisted that once Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez had matched the figure stated, he should be allowed to become the first player to move from United to Anfield since Phil Chisnall in 1964.
“The Premier League Board appointed panel have heard submissions of evidence from both parties and has ruled to dismiss the player’s case,” said a Premier League statement.
The panel had gone into overtime over their decision to decide whether Heinze should be allowed to join Liverpool.
A verdict was expected yesterday but shortly after 6.30pm it became clear that nothing would be forthcoming until today.
Before the tribunal Heinze made one last plea to his current employers.
“My idea has not changed and my objective is to go to Liverpool,” he said. “I will always be grateful to United, but now I hope they allow me to get my wish.”

Juan Roman Riquelme's agent claims Tottenham Hotspur have made an offer for the Argentinian playmaker.

Villarreal are willing to sell Riquelme after the player spent the second half of last season back in Argentina with Boca Juniors.
There has been interest from several clubs across Europe, but reports suggest Spurs have lodged a 15million euros (£10million) bid.
Riquelme's representative Marcos Franchi feels Villarreal should accept the offer from Tottenham, who have already spent heavily over the summer.
The Spanish side's president Fernando Roig is considering the bid and Franchi is waiting for an official response from Riquelme's current club.
        Good offer

"Despite that we haven't been told anything officially, we know that Villarreal has received a very important offer from Tottenham and that the president Fernando Roig is analysing it," Franchi told Radio La Red.
"They have to make a decision before August 31, otherwise Riquelme will stay at Villarreal as there aren't any other serious negotiations.
"If nothing new appears I think that they should accept this offer as it is good for the club and the player.
"I don't think that Riquelme would be useful for Villarreal without playing.
"It would be much more useful for them to sell him so they recover what they invested in him when they bought him."
