Mel: My first six weeks in England have been positive and difficult

Former Real Betis manager, Pepe Mel is quickly adjusting to his life as manager of English Premier League side, West Bromwich Albion and admits that the culture of life and football are far different than in Spain.

In an exclusive interview with Spanish sports daily, Marca, Mel spoke about his first six weeks at the head of West Brom and the differences in play.

“My first six weeks has been positive and difficult. I’m trying to change the philosophy at a club that has played a different brand of football to mine during the past three years. For now, I’m pleased with how the players are adapting to my playing style.

“Fourth Spanish coach? More like the third, as I consider Roberto Martínez to be half English. I think he does too. He’s been in England for 30 years. Yes, it’s hard to get a coaching job here and I feel privileged.”

Mel then described the difference between Spain and England, such as diving, the strength of the teams and the media.

“Here they don’t like diving, but it happens. Before I arrived here, Chelsea equalised against us thanks to a Ramires dive. When they played us at the Hawthorns the crowd whistled at him throughout to remind him. Nobody likes a diver.

“We’ve played against the top five teams in the league and neither Everton, Liverpool nor Chelsea were able to beat us. Playing against one of the big clubs in Spain is a guaranteed defeat.

“I think that in England, once the final whistle blows there is nothing more to debate. It’s a cultural thing. There is no public, or press present at any club during training.”

Seguro que le venden desde aquí como un gran resultado.
Sinceramente estos empates es lo peor que puede pasar al WBA porque si pierde ya podrían echarlo, pero como el cabesa va sumando puntitos pues no saben qué hacer.
