    Re: BUNDESLiGA 2013/2014

                  Re: BUNDESLiGA 2013/2014

Felix Magath could find himself sitting on the Hamburg bench before the weekend's clash with Eintracht Braunschweig as a power struggle continues at the northern Germany club.

Crisis talks have been going on for three days already following last Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Hertha Berlin.

That result left the club inside the bottom two of the Bundesliga after six straight defeats and faith in coach Bert van Marwijk is wavering.

Opinion is currently divided at board level as to what is the best way forward with half of the board members reported to be keen on sticking with Van Marwijk while the other half would like former coach Magath to take charge.

Magath saved the club from relegation in his first spell in charge between 1995 and 1997, guiding them from the position they are currently in, 17th, to the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

He went on to win back-to-back league and cup doubles with Bayern Munich before guiding Wolfsburg to a maiden Bundesliga title, although after finishing second with Schalke in 2010, his managerial career has taken a nosedive.

He left the Royal Blues in March 2011, returning to Wolfsburg for just 18 months.

Magath's affinity with Hamburg is a deep one, however. His goal in the final of the 1983 European Cup earned HSV a 1-0 victory over Juventus - their last major honour.

"I've never experienced anything like what I've seen here these last few days," said Van Marwijk at a press conference which became merely his opportunity to deliver a statement on Monday with no questions permitted.

"I get the feeling the club is destroying itself," added the Dutchman, whose last game in charge of Hamburg could be their DFB-Pokal quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Regardless of the outcome of that match, Van Marwijk's future seems more dependent on which lobby wins at board level with further crisis talks

Bundesliga the world's most attended football league

9.08 million spectators attended games in Germany's two top tiers in the first half of the current campaign
The Bundesliga remains the most attended football league in the world, according to figures from the opening half of the 2013/14 season.

Each top-flight game in the 2013/14 Hinrunde was attended by an average of 42,125* supporters, an increase of 1.81 per cent compared to the same period of the 2012/13 campaign, when the average attendance figure was 41,377.

                      'Attractiveness of the league expanding'

In total, 6.4 million fans were present at the 152 games between August and December 2013 (excluding the rearranged Matchday 17 fixture between VfB Stuttgart and FC Bayern München), which was also an increase of 1.14 per cent on the 6.33 million visitors in 2012/13.

“As was the case last season, the supporters continue to expand the attractiveness of the Bundesliga, which in turn thrills its fans with top-level football like no other professional league. The commitment of clubs to offer their supporters affordable ticket prices, a comfortable viewing experience and high standards of safety and security is as strong as ever,” commented Christian Seifert, chief executive of the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga.

                      Second-highest total attendance

The increase in attendance figures is also noticeable in Bundesliga 2, where an average of 17,479 fans were present for games during the first half of the season, a rise of 8.8 per cent on the figure of 16,083 in 2012/13. The total number of spectators at the 153 games in the opening half of 2013/14 in Germany's two top tiers was 2.67 million, up from 2.46 million in the previous year.

Overall, the final figure of supporters who attended games in German licensed football in the first season half was 9.08 million, up 3.3 per cent from the 8.79 million the year before. This is the second-highest total attendance figure for Germany’s top two divisions after the first half of a season.

*Figures calculated using attendance details submitted by the 36 licensed clubs of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.

DFL presents Bundesliga Report 2014: Ninth straight turnover increase

Christian Seifert, CEO of the DFL, praised the Bundesliga's successful "split between top level sports performance and economic rationality"

Bundesliga records highest operative profits of all time with 383.5 million euros.

The Bundesliga recorded its ninth straight turnover record during the 2012-13 season, continuing its lasting growth with 2.17 billion euros and topping its previous year’s amount by 4.4 per cent. The Bundesliga recorded 383.5 million euros in operative profits, the highest of all time. Seventeen of 18 clubs were in the black with turnover before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). On the expenditures side, salaries for players and coaches remained stable at 39 per cent. The Bundesliga 2 recorded the highest turnover in its history with 419.4 million euros (a 9.1 per cent increase on last season), and fifteen of the 18 second division clubs recorded positive EBITDA numbers. The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga made the announcement at today’s presentation of the Bundesliga Report 2014 in Frankfurt am Main.

“The Bundesliga is succeeding in the split between top level sports performance and economic rationality, especially compared to others in Europe. Thanks also to the further increases with the media contracts that take effect this season, the league is on the road to extending its position as the second-strongest earning football league in Europe,” said Christian Seifert, CEO of the DFL.

In total, the turnover of the 36 clubs and capital companies of the DFL also increased for the ninth time in a row. All told, the clubs collected 2.59 billion euros in the past season. Just like in past seasons, professional football saw increases in all central income categories (advertising, media and player revenues).

The clubs and capital companies paid 850 million euros (last year 800 million euros) in taxes and dues last season, more than ever before.

Schalke keeps reasonable prices despite Real visit

                          Mein Gott – how cheap!!

German football is in great shape. Not only down on the pitch, where we can see a brilliant new generation of players with a great future ahead of them - it's also doing great guns up in the stands. The Bundesliga is the league with the highest turnout, mainly thanks to the reasonable pricing of its tickets - a lot more affordable when compared to the Spanish Liga.

Despite being a huge event for the German club, the cheapest seat only costs €27

As a clear example, we only have to take a look at the prices Schalke has announced for the game against Real Madrid. Despite being a huge event for the German club, the cheapest seat only costs €27, the dearest, €77.

In Spain, going to a game is no small luxury, and for many, simply out of the question. To add insult to injury, the minimum wage in Germany is 50% higher than the Spanish one. At the Bernabéu or the Camp Nou, the cheapest ticket compared to Schalke is usually double the price.

Osasuna at the Camp Nou, for example, the cheapest seats cost €47, the most expensive being €177

For the game against Osasuna at the Camp Nou, for example, the cheapest seats cost €47, the most expensive being €177. At Real Madrid, the prices for the round of 16 Champions League game last season ranged from €75 to €100.

The ticket prices at Bayern, present European champion and Bundesliga leader, are also way off the prices Real demands. Tickets for the game against Arsenal are priced between €35 and €100.

Felix Magath: How new Fulham boss came through his first test

We were promised the Demon Headmaster, but new Fulham head coach Felix Magath spent most of Saturday acting more like a supply teacher trying to make a good impression at his new school.

The 60-year-old German is known as a tough guy and a tyrant, but, despite being denied a debut victory by a late West Brom equaliser, he responded by mixing polite smiles with whispered words of encouragement to his players and then the press.

It is true he yelled so hard at one point during the game that his chewing gum flew out of his mouth, but Magath's entrance into English football was generally much quieter than expected.

If this maverick coach was angry with his team for letting two points slip from their grasp, he certainly did not show it in public.

But perhaps the "dictator" was just being diplomatic, and Magath merely chooses when, where and how he does his shouting.

Felix Magath 'satisfied' with draw on debut

After all, he had made plenty of noise when he talked up this clash with one of his side's chief relegation rivals before kick-off, calling it "the biggest game in Fulham's history".

And he also showed he meant business as he marched off the team bus upon his arrival at The Hawthorns.

Maybe because time, or the lack of it, is so important to a man whose team were bottom of the table with 12 games of the season remaining when he took over, he was clearly in a hurry to get his day going.

First off the bus, at almost the instant that the doors opened, he acknowledged the cheers of a small group of Fulham fans who had waited patiently for his arrival but had no time for autographs or any niceties as he strode into the stadium, eventually followed by his players.

Without speaking a word, the message was clear: he may be Fulham's third manager of the season but this is his team now, and he is leading from the front.

But would there be a similar sort of statement when the game got going? Nobody knew for sure. We have read much of Magath's methods - but what of his tactics?

West Brom manager Pepe Mel had admitted before kick-off he did not know what to expect either. After all, Magath had only been in charge since Valentine's Day.

Yes, he had called extra training last weekend - of course he had. But what effect could any man - even Magath - have on the worst team, not to mention leakiest defence, in the top flight in just eight days in the job?

As it turns out, the effect was instant, but limited. Fulham were impressive in the first half and took the game to their hosts.

Backed up by Scott Parker and Steve Sidwell in the centre of midfield, Lewis Holtby, in a roaming role, and Ashkan Dejagah, on the right, saw lots of the ball, teased the Baggies defence and supplied plenty of crosses into the box.

                            Who is Felix Magath?
                            Felix Magath
•As an attacking midfielder, won the Bundesliga three times with Hamburg between 1978 and 1983, playing alongside England striker Kevin Keegan
•Won the 1983 European Cup, scoring the winner against Juventus (above, right)
•Won 43 caps for West Germany, winning the 1980 European Championship and playing at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, appearing in the final at Mexico '86
•First managed Hamburg in 1995, and has also been in charge at Nuremberg, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Schalke
•Won league and cup double with Bayern Munich in 2004-05 and 2005-06
•Delivered Wolfsburg their first Bundesliga title in 2008-09

Magath seldom rose from his seat but, when he did, it was Holtby, who played under him at Schalke between 2009 and 2013, who he sought out.

Again, the primary purpose seemed to be to communicate with his team. Holtby speaks German and English fluently, and was frequently used by his manager to pass on instructions to his team-mates.

The most telling time he did that was during the mass celebrations in the Fulham technical area following Dejagah's goal, when Magath all but ignored the scorer and went straight to Holtby, to talk more into his ear.

But was Magath also trying to get more out of that particular player?

He did not really clear it up when he spoke about the on-loan Tottenham star at the final whistle but, if former Liverpool striker Sean Dundee was right when he said Magath only picked on players that he cared about, then he must love Holtby - he hardly left him alone all game.

It was the 23-year-old's tenacity and skill on the ball that stood out when Fulham were in the ascendancy but, perhaps unsurprisingly, Magath picked out another aspect of his play to praise.

"Lewis was busy," Magath explained. "He was running a lot, running over the whole field."

On this evidence, there is a lot more to Holtby and to Fulham than just the ability to run. At The Hawthorns they created enough opportunities to be further ahead at half-time, and it is their attacking ability that gives them genuine hope of staying up.

But is also clear that Magath, a lover of hard work from his players, has much of that to do himself to turn Fulham's season around, especially at the back.

After half-time, their energy faded and they fell back into old habits. With Fulham defending deep and not particularly well, it was a surprise that it took until the 86th minute for the Baggies to equalise.

Magath was offered plenty of bait by the media in his post-match press conference but refused to blame either his keeper Maarten Stekelenburg for the error that led to the goal - "it can happen" was his reaction - or goal-line technology for the fact it was given. "It makes it easier to accept," he said.

Instead he kept smiling and chose to focus on the positives from his first game, boldly adding he was certain he would keep the Cottagers up despite having to revise his survival target of six wins from 12 games to six from 11.

Overall, it was not the reaction most people anticipated from a man with his fearsome reputation but, after the many tales that have followed him to these shores, it is possible that was the entire point.

Whether he will be so forgiving of any future mistakes remains to be seen. But then we are sure to learn a lot more about Magath over the next 11 weeks as Fulham's Premier League fate is decided.

Bayern Munich title a matter of time - Thomas Muller

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller says nothing can stop them retaining the title.

The European champions could win the Bundesliga in record time, beating last year's achievement of securing top spot with six games to spare.

Bayern's last Bundesliga reverse was in October 2012, a 2-1 home defeat by Bayer Leverkusen.

Boss Pep Guardiola has not lost a league match since April 2012, when Barcelona were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid.

They are 19 points clear of Bayer Leverkusen with 12 games left and have not lost in 47 league matches.

"Anybody who follows the Bundesliga a bit knows there's not much that can go wrong at this point," Muller said.

"The way we're going and winning games, it's only a matter of time."

The Germany international, 24, scored twice as Bayern earned a 14th successive league victory by winning 4-0 at Hannover on Sunday, although he picked up a hamstring injury, which means he cannot return to light training for five days.

Coach Pep Guardiola, who took charge of Bayern in June last year and has yet to lose a Bundesliga match, said: "One game less, three more points. It took a while for us to find our rhythm [at Hannover]. We played very well after opening the scoring.

"We're looking at the table but at the end of the day it's all down to us."

Franz Beckenbauer has warned Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos not to hold the club to ransom following reports linking him with a big-money move to Manchester United.

Reports in the British media on Monday morning suggested United are prepared to pay the Germany international £250,000 a week if he moves to Old Trafford.

Kroos would treble his wages if he moved to United, who would reportedly be prepared to pay the German giants £30m for his services.

The midfielder's contract ends in June next year but Bayern have as yet been unable to agree a new deal with the 24-year-old.

Bayern's honorary president Beckenbauer told Sky Germany: "He shouldn't raise the stakes too high.

"Bayern will make an effort to keep him, but when the demands are too high, a decision will be made.

"There is no player who you have to give everything to keep. Everyone is replaceable."

Bayern's director of sport Matthias Sammer says the European champions are keen to keep the attacking midfielder.

"We know that he is a very good player and we want to continue with Kroos," said Sammer. "Everyone at the club sees it that way."
