The Danish international has been little more than a fringe player for Die Königsblauen and reportedly has long pined for a return to Rangers. The 28-year-old has a Scottish wife and young daughter and is said to be keen to return in order to make a home.
In his latest interview with Onside.dk, Lovenkrands refused to be drawn out on the Rangers reports but made it abundantly clear that his heart is no longer with Schalke.
"I need to leave in order to be picked by the national side again," he told the Danish website.
"I can see no reason to stay here when I am not playing and I am hoping for a new club."
Fulham are also said to be keen on the fleet-footed wide-man, who Schalke reportedly value at €4 million.
