Julio Cardeñosa's time on the bench of the Real Betis Balompié first team ended on October 14, 1990, after 7 league games.
The team had been promoted by the hand of Julio Cardeñosa in the month of May, and from very early on it was seen that the squad, young and with many homegrown players, was going to have a bad time to maintain the category. Attempts to strengthen the team continued throughout the preseason, but a large part of the financial budget for this went to the signing of Jordi Vinyals, who certainly did not give the expected performance at all. The other signings that came (Rodolfo Dapena and Luis Miguel Fernández) did not raise the level of the team either.
Julio Cardeñosa had several confrontations with part of the board led by Hugo Galera. The promised reinforcements did not come and Betis was the only First Division team that did not have any place covered by the two foreigners then allowed. Rumors continued about the interest in footballers from Eastern Europe, with Russians Andrei Kobelev and Igor Dobrovolski and Bulgarian Iliyan Kiryakov as the main targets, and getting nowhere.
After the defeat at home against Sevilla, an important part of the board of directors, led by José León, proposed the cessation of Cardeñosa, which did not take place at the moment, although there was a management ultimatum that was consummated on the 14th after a defeat in Mallorca and a draw at home against Zaragoza.
Julio Cardeñosa appeared before the media after his dismissal on October 16, and in an elegant gesture, when everyone expected high-sounding statements as a result of his friction with the board, he said goodbye to his position as coach and assumed the work done , as well as the consequences of poor results.
On the pages of Diario 16 Andalucía, the journalist Luis Carlos Peris highlighted the figure of Don Julio the next day, as the Verdiblanca fans have always known him.
By the way, the club behaved very badly with him. In the following season, 91-92, he entrusted the preparation of the third youth team of the society, behind technicians with a football curriculum much inferior to that of Valladolid. And in July 1992 they simply fired him, thus cutting off the career that had linked him to Real Betis Balompié since 1974, first as a footballer and then as a member of the technical secretariat and the coaching staff.
