Betis have eyes on Boro skipper

Middlesbrough skipper Emanuel Pogatetz is reportedly a January transfer target of Spanish Primera Liga outfit Real Betis.

Spanish daily AS claims Betis coach Paco Chaparro has made the Austrian international defender his top priority signing for the New Year as he attempts to shore up his defence in La Liga this season.

However, there are no quotes to back up the reports and even if Betis do make a formal approach to Boro for Pogatetz they will no doubt be disappointed.

The 25-year-old, who was signed from Bayer Leverkusen as a left-back by former boss Steve McClaren in 2005, has now become a key player in the centre of defence for current boss Gareth Southgate, who also made him his captain ahead of this season.

Pogatetz has also recently spoken of his delight at being a Middlesbrough player and revealed that his family are settled in the North-East so it is highly unlikely that he will look to leave the Riverside Stadium in the near future.

He's young, good and captain of Middlesbrough. He's a really dirty player though and would likely suffer in La Liga because of that. I don't see this happening at all as he'd cost close to €12-15 million, and that's money we don't have to spend.

How much would be? We DEFINITELY need a central defender, but is hard to find a decent player at a good price this time of the year. Might be a good option if is not too expensive.

I believe that most premier league and championship players are totally overpriced.No player with that limited talent is worth that kind of money.

He's young and plays for a Premier League club, so that automatically prices him around maybe £5-7 million. He's captain of a Premier League club and so you can add another 1 or 2 million to that. Then many believe him to be a good footballer and so you add another 1 or 2 million as it's in inflated market in England. So then you have about maybe £9 or 10 million. Convert it to €'s and you get about €11-12 million.

Also, in the Premier League players receive higher wages. I don't know what Betis could offer him that Middlesbrough couldn't in terms of finances.

The Premier League is a crazy, crazy league in terms of money.

i agree, this could be a major problem for him... if he plays like that in la liga he will be sent off five times in one season. on the other hand, that's exactly what we need. sometimes our central defenders play like the 'sisters of mercy' ... a roughneck like pogatetz would be good. but 12-15 million? that's ridiculous.
