Real Betis star Edu will be out of action for a month and a half after suffering a recurrence of a leg injury, the Primera Liga club have confirmed.
Edu, who was the club's top scorer for the second year running last season, felt a twinge as he scored Betis' first goal in their 2-0 cup victory over Castellon on Wednesday and medical tests have confirmed it is the same injury that he only came back from two weeks ago.
The club have confirmed the 29-year-old Brazilian will be sidelined for at least six weeks, with club doctor Santiago Perez Hidalgo adding that the player had taken the news badly.
"He has had the misfortune to have a new fracture around the old injury with serious edema," he told Spanish sports daily AS. "We will do an intensive treatment in our rehabilitation clinic so that he returns as soon as possible,
"Edu took the news of this new mishap quite badly. The lad was quite upset, but these are things that happen in football."
It is another major blow for coach Francisco Chaparro, already without winger Mark Gonzalez for more than three months after he suffered an injury on international duty two weeks ago.
