Edu fires warning shot to Betis
Edu has warned Real Betis that he could head for the exit door if they do not start talks about a new contract before December.
The 29-year-old Brazilian, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, was one of Betis' best players last season, scoring 12 times in 29 league appearances and accounting for almost a third of all the club's goals.
Villarreal were one of a number of clubs interested in Edu, who had a number of disagreements with the board in the summer over his wages, but the striker eventually opted to remain in Seville.
However, he insists that will all change if the club do not offer him a new deal sooner rather than later.
"If they had treated me with a little more respect the whole thing could have been different," said Edu. "Everyone knows that if they do not call me before December I am not going to renew."
Edu's goals fired Betis to safety last season and he believes the club can do even better this year after a summer of rebuilding.
Coach Paco Chaparro has signed Mehmet Aurelio, Achille Emana, Fabian Monzon, Juanma Nelson and Sergio Garcia.
"Things have been done better because all the signings came with the coach's consent, while last year, when Hector Cuper arrived there were already new players," added Edu.
However, with many people saying this could be the best Betis team ever, Edu has moved to play down expectations.
"I do not know about that, but people talk very well about the team they had in the time of (Robert) Jarni, Finidi and Alfonso, while the best results was got by the 2005 side, who won the cup and qualified for the Champions League," he continued.
"But results are indicators and this squad has to show if they are better or not."
