First, Betis lost 3-4 to Almería in front of almost no-one (less than 5,000 according to estimates) in the cup, a result that could have been a whole lot worse as the verdiblancos were actually four-down shortly after half-time before mounting something of a comeback near the end. We'll need to win by two clear goals in the away leg next week.
Then last night - much more importantly - our heroes managed a vital 1-0 win at home against Mallorca, despite playing awfully for the first half and not terribly well in the second. Vincenzo Rennella scored the winner, latching on to the rebound after typically sharp work from Rubén Castro, but it's not thought to be enough for Juan Merino to stay on as coach. Instead, it's thought he'll be no. 2 to Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, who is reported to be ever closer to a return to the Betis bench after selling his shares in Mallorca, where he's been a not particularly general manager/co-owner for the past few years. In Seville, however, he's still remembered fondly for taking Betis to the Champions League in the mid 2000s, not to mention winning the Copa del Rey in 2005. His appointment could well be announced in the next day or two.

For the moment, the new coach of Betis are not going to arrive yet, if it occurs at all. Moreover, it is not clear. The new president of Betis claims that the deadline for his arrival will be the last week of December. Let's see what will happen.
