Real Betis currently sit 6th in the Segunda, but after a change of board on Tuesday and Juan Carlos Ollero taking over as president of the club, the first move was to sack manager Julio Velázquez and pave the way for Pepe Mel to make his return.
A new brush is certainly sweeping clean at Real Betis, with a new board of directors and president assuming control of the historic Andaluz club, as former president Domínguez Platas and his board we’re replaced entirely.
New president Juan Carlos Ollero and his board have wasted absolutely no time in making immediate changes. Little more than a few hours after officially assuming his post on Tuesday night, he formally announced that manager Julio Velázquez had been relieved of his duties.
“The club is enormously thankful to Velázquez for his effort and dedication during the last few months.” Declared Ollero, before adding that B team manager Juan Merino will take charge of the first-team for the time being, though without being specific how long that position will be held.
“It wouldn’t be sensible for me to say if Merino will continue until the end of the season or not. I can’t anticipate if Merino will be there for one, two or three weeks. I don’t know.”
With the departure of old board and manager, reports from Seville have swiftly linked Pepe Mel with a return to Betis, with suggestions that his lawyer has already been contacted by the club. Ollero however acknowledged how much affection Pepe Mel has for Betis and the fans have for him as their favoured managerial choice, but refused to confirm if there has been any communication.
“The name of Pepe Mel is a name that no Betico would object to, but we have to think calmly about who will be our manager. No board likes to chose with just one option. We want to look at all the possibilities and our aim is to have the best number of alternatives, amongst good managers for Betis.”
There was a hint however from Ollero, when he spoke of the budgetary considerations of the club, suggesting that he does indeed have Pepe Mel firmly in mind for the position.
“Betis is putting together a viability plan and a budget. The budget is what it is and the value of Mel, I don’t know yet. We can clarify that when we talk with Pepe Mel, when we talk and that’s if we talk.”
If those talks do take place, the tears Pepe Mel shed when he left his post last season, could shortly become tears of joy, marking a return to the club he loves most of all and whose fans, love him just as much in return.
