Today's game (kick-off 6.15pm) is against Alavés from the Basque Country, whom you may remember taking Liverpool to extra time in the 2001 UEFA Cup final. They've been to hell - well, Segunda B - and back since then and they're currently in the wrong half of the Segunda table, but word has it that they'll be tough to break down. On the other hand, Betis have been threatening to put in a properly decent performance for two or three weeks now, and I think the players - if not the ever-despondent fans - will be confident of taking the three points. Dani Ceballos and Alfred N'Diaye are back from international duty, but Jordi Figueras is suspended.

Betis 1-2 Alavés.

A huge, rather depressing backwards step for your RBB this evening, as they were deservedly beaten by visitors who were better organised, zippier and more direct from the very first moment. Betis were two-down to a couple of fine goals within 25 minutes and needed a second-half penalty (for handball) to come within a sniff of making the game interesting. They failed at all the basics of team football - ie moving the ball quickly, passing to team-mates, running into space - and generally looked clueless in defence, midfield AND attack. And just to round off a wonderful evening, it rained.

1-2: Poor BETIS.... Velazquez and BETIS lost the arguments. The current situation is no longer sustainable, and Rumors speak again about Julio Velazquez on the brink of being sacked by Real Betis.
