Real Betis look set to wrap up a deal for Elche’s Edu Albácar this week, following swift negotiations to bring in a replacement for the recently injured Alex Martínez.
The 35-year-old had agreed with Elche that he would make a decision over the weekend, while it now appears that the club will not stand in his way of a move to Julio Velázquez’s Real Betis side, if he so wishes. Club captain Albácar is expected to notify Elche of his decision today, which will pave the way for a move to Andalusia if he chooses to move on.
Albácar’s contract at Elche is set to expire next summer, while the veteran defender is believed to have been attracted by the offer of a deal until 2016 at Real Betis. Because of the offer of an extra year, the Seville club are optimistic that a deal will be completed over the next few days, and that their left back problem will be solved in efficient time.
Albácar has appeared in ten matches for Elche this season and has largely been Fran Escribá’s first choice left back at the club. Despite that, Elche are still trying to manage their finances, while his departure from the wage bill will ease some of that tension.
