  • Real Betis-Numancia

Really looking forward to the first game of the season at the Benito Villamarín - as are, no doubt, the other 35,000 season-ticket holders. Expect Lolo Reyes and Alfred N'Diaye to start in the heart of midfield, with Matilla a bit ahead of them and a front three of Rubén (playing wide), Molina and Cejudo.
Numancia, who started with a home defeat to Sporting Gijón, will include ex-Bético right-back Isidoro, but not on-loan striker Braian Rodríguez, who can't play against his parent club under the terms of the agreement between the teams.
Off the pitch, look out for the new Gol Sur (on the right from the TV cameras' perspective), which has been renamed the Miki Roque Stand and socially engineered - somewhat controversially - to include exclusively young (and, in theory, loud) fans.

Betis 2-1 Numancia. Really this should have been a much more convincing win as the visitors were never much more than dogged, but some wayward finishing and a slightly uneven performance overall meant Betis were rather hanging on at the end.
Rubén opened the scoring after just five minutes when he latched on to a Cejudo through ball, but Numancia, who barely had a shot all game, took advantage of clumsy defending at a set piece to equalise a quarter of an hour later.
Betis played nicely in patches thereafter - and just OK for the rest - but had probably done enough not to need help from the referee, who awarded a very soft penalty with 15 minutes to go. Cejudo, who was a threat all game, crossed from the right and the ref saw push on substitute Rennella in the area, despite the fact the goalkeeper had the ball well covered. Rubén dispatched the spot kick and that was really game over.
Two very Betis incidents must be reported, though. Right-back Molinero had to be substituted because he didn't have a REPLACEMENT SHIRT for his bloodied original (after a clash of heads), a failing that required key midfielder Lolo Reyes to play out of position for three-quarters of the game. And just before the end, substitute Nono managed to hit the post from a central position all of two yards out for a miss that deserves to go viral over the next few days. Look out for it.
