Earlier this week the recently relegated Real Betis announced that the coach Gabriel Calderón will not continue at the club next season. The coach took over Betis in January but didn’t manage to save what was left of Betis’ season. The coach was thanked by club president Manuel Dominguez Platas in a farewell press conference for his “involvement, honesty and loyalty” as the two parties went separate ways.
Calderón himself commented the situation in the press conference alongside the club president, saddened by the circumstances: “I leave sad, disappointed and appreciative”, he said. “Sad for not having saved the team, which I feel responsible for, and thankful for the fans, the players and the club. Given the results, it is logical that I won’t continue. I will support the club like a shareholder, for it to return to the Primera as soon as possible”, he said.
“I came in a situation where I came and I have given my life from the inside out to Betis, I didn’t want to be on the outside”, Calderón stated, and continued: “We already know what football is. A coach needs maximum support, and whoever comes now should have it. I don’t have recommendations as to who should fill my position, they will look for the competent people. I have already passed on a report player by player. The template isn’t so bad but clearly some things have to change.”
“My worst moment was the descent. The worst thing was to bring joy to the fans and then take it away”, he said.
Speaking about his own future, Calderón was cagey: “I have contacts with teams but I have to travel to finalize any offer.”
The club president Manuel Dominguez Platas assured that the decision was mutual: “The decision has been a result of conversation. He told us his plans for the future and we decided that the best thing for the entity was this. We do not yet have a new coach but Alexis [techinical secretary] is already working on the search. The market is complex and we don’t know which will arrive first, the sporting director or the coach, although I am more concerned about the coach who will arrive as soon as possible in order to have a say in the decisions we will make”, he stated.
In Calderón’s farewell press conference, present were many employees of the club, and the club is actively on the market to find a new coach in the near future.
