Real Betis manager Gabriel Calderón was pleased that his team showed their competitive spirit, even in defeat against Osasuna, who won the game but now join them in the Segunda.
Whilst it was meaningless for Real Betis, there was no doubting how important winning was for Osasuna, which they duly did. It wasn’t enough to keep the home side in the Primera though.
Following the game, Betis manager Gabriel Calderón was satisfied with the effort his team made, to push Osasuna for much of the encounter, never letting their hosts feel comfortable.
“We were already relegated so for ourselves, we came here to play with honesty and dignity, which is what we did. Osasuna got themselves into the game as they had to and we were a little slower getting into the game. It’s also true to say that for more than an hour, we deserved more than a draw, but in the end, we couldn’t.”
When Osasuna scored in the 12th minute of the game, a surge of home fans at one end of the ground collapsed the fence before them and caused numerous injuries. The game was delayed whilst casualties were treated and order was restored, before being resumed.
Asked for his thoughts about what had transpired, Calderón was critical of the current conditions at El Sadar, but indicated that maintenance and security of the stadium, is something the club and the local government will have to look into more carefully.
“The truth is it’s been many years since I last came here and I’m a little surprised about the state of the stadium in 2014. I think it’s something for the politicians and a club like Osasuna to deal with, to avoid situations like this, as things could have been much worse.”
