  • Calderón: It’s a question of morals, principals and values

Real Betis manager Gabriel Calderón assured that his team will keep fighting for their dignity, if nothing else now that they’re already relegated from the Primera, even though visiting Real Valladolid desperately need to points for their own survival bid.

At his press call ahead of Sunday’s game against Real Valladolid, Gabriel Calderón reflected that the worst has already happened for Real Betis, with their relegation, but promised that in their remaining games, they’ll try to restore some pride.

“Being here today in the situation we’re in today, is difficult. However, we must keep giving a good account of ourselves until the end. We have the obligation of being up to the level of our fans and of this club. We’ll keep fighting in the two remaining games, trying to win. That’s something we’ve chased, but have been unable to achieve for six games.”

Calderón also appreciates that the atmosphere at the Benito Villamarín may not be the best, given their relegation. Something which he appreciates has been very hurtful for the fans to accept.

“The sadness was already there at our last game, knowing we were relegated. I came here with just one aim and convinced that we could keep this club in the Primera. Having not achieved that, there was great sadness, particularly for the fans. We owe them and it was tougher because we’d enthused them with the performance of the team and in the end, we finished up like this.”

Calderón was also asked, if in hindsight he’d have preferred not to have taken the job, given the final outcome. He has no regrets, other than that he had very little time to turn things around and little space for any mistakes.

“I would have preferred not to have just four games to really get to know the team, to look for and recover their morale. We had little margin for error. It’s within normal parameters to make mistakes, but having such a small margin to within, other things work against you. I think the writing was already on the wall that things would turn out like this.”

Asked if he’ll be staying at the club next season, Calderón seemed to suggest that he may not be, before explaining that there needs to be a complete overhaul at all levels at Real Betis.

“I’ve never been thinking about that. My only aim was what it was. To keep the team in the Primera. The most important thing now is that the club reorganises and gets back to the Primera. Here, no individual matters, just the club and being up to the standards of the these fans, who belong in the Primera.”

“The future of this club is in it’s level of organisation and being up to the standards of its supporters. Unfortunately, our relegation has been confirmed. That’s why it’s fundamental now that the club organises itself well and fights for what it has to fight for, which is returning to the Primera.”

As for this Sunday’s game against Real Valladolid, though his team have nothing left to fight for, in stark contrast to their opponents, Calderón insisted that it’s a matter of pride and principals, that they compete to win the match.

“We have to win for ourselves. It’s a question of morals, principals and values. We have to represent this club and win each game playing the best way we possibly can, without leaving any doubts whatsoever.”
