Real Betis manager, Gabriel Calderón admitted that he doesn’t know his own fate, which will be decided at the merciful end to what has been a disastrous season, but insists that he will keep the players competitive through the end of the season, despite being relegated last week.
In his post-match press conference via the club’s official website, Calderón spoke about the upcoming match against Almeria, who are also fighting for survival and the team’s mood this week.
“We have worked hard like we do every week. The intensity of work continues to be the same. Nothing has changed. The only thing that is different is confirmation that we have been relegated to the Second Division. We should continue in the same way as we have until now. We want to win every match.
“[The players] are aware of the situation and that they should be professionals. I will choose those players whose behaviour demonstrates their commitment. To win a match I have to count on players who are professional. Fortunately, they nearly all are.”
Calderón then discussed the situation with former starting goalkeeper Guille Sara, who didn’t show up for the team’s match on Saturday and refused to train on the following Tuesday, forcing the team to exercise disciplinary action against the Argentinean loanee.
“Without wishing to go into detail disciplinary action is being taken against the player, a player who does not respect the team’s rules shouldn’t be in the team. It is of no importance when this happens in the season, the players should behave and respect the rules like the rest of the group.
“He missed Saturday’s game. He should have been there. He didn’t want to train on Tuesday after a meeting that we had in the changing room so this is the action we have decided to take. The extent of the disciplinary action will be decided next week.”
The Argentine went on to add that he hasn’t “been told anything” about a possible contract renewal and admits that while he has made mistakes this season, he has always done his best for his club.
“Obviously, I will have made some mistakes. After every match I always analyse the decisions that I made both before and after. Of all the matches, except the first four matches in which I had to recover the team’s morale, the Europa league match against Sevilla, the one against Malaga and against Rayo Vallecano are the three matches that I can be most self-critical about, in terms of the things that I could have changed. If I had done things differently, the result might have been different.”
Calderon concluded by discussing Sevilla’s advancement to the UEFA Europa League final over semi-final opponent, Valencia.
“I saw most of the game, I thought Valencia was the superior team, the result should have been 3-0. Sevilla didn’t play as well as they usually do. Valencia were in control of the match until the very end. I don’t have any strong feelings about it. I was happy that Valencia was beaten because the manager is a friend of mine and he deserved it. I’m thinking about the situation that we are in at the moment and the situation that we could be in. Nothing else matters.”
