  • Perquis: If I see one of my team-mates relaxing, I’ll have a problem with them

Real Betis defender Damien Perquis isn’t clear about his own future at the club yet, but insists that in the final three games of the season, even with his team already relegated, every player must show their pride at wearing the shirt.

After a publicity event promoting football in schools on Wednesday, Real Betis defender Damien Perquis responded to questions from gathered journalists. The first of which was regarding his own future at the club, following their relegation to the Segunda.

“Lots of things are being said, but we’ll have to see what’s true and what isn’t. I’ve not spoken with anyone at the club yet, so I’m looking forward to the arrival of the new sporting director and talking with him about my future.”

Perquis also explained that during the final three games of the season, he won’t tolerate a lack of effort or desire from any of his team-mates, insisting that it’s an honour to wear the shirt of Real Betis, whilst also representing the club and most importantly, the fans.

“If I see one of my team-mates relaxing, then I’ll have a problem with them. We’re professionals. Anyone who doesn’t want to fight wearing the shirt of Betis until the end of the season, they will have problems. When you put on the Betis shirt and take to the pitch, you have to forget about everything else.”

Asked to explain the causes of their relegation, Perquis admitted it was hard to pinpoint particular reasons, but acknowledge that the performances from the team, simply haven’t been good enough.

“Lots of things have happened and it’s been a very complicated season. Betis deserves to be in the Primera, but the work we’ve don on the pitch, hasn’t been good enough. With the group of players we have, we shouldn’t be heading to the Segunda.”

As for a message to the fans, Perquis offered his heartfelt apologies that they’ve had to suffer the humiliation of relegation, but on a more positive not, expressed his confidence that the club will straight back.

“We have to ask them for forgiveness, because we’ve done so badly. They have Betis in their hearts and will always be with the club to the death. Though we’ve been relegated, I’m sure this club will quickly return to the Primera.”

The sensations ahead of last weekend’s match were a difficult experience, explained Perquis, who added that he’s never know what it’s like to be on a relegated team before.

“We were all affected. Knowing ahead of that game that we were down already, that made it very complicated. I’ve never known the experience of relegation in my career. It was a very bad time, because our sensation is one of working to win and not to go down. It was a huge blow and you could see that during the game.”
