Real Betis manager, Gabriel Calderon lamented his side’s 0-1 defeat to Real Sociedad on Saturday evening, but was even worse off going into the match after learning that Getafe had beaten Malaga to mathematically relegate Betis to the Segunda Division.
In his post-match press conference, Calderon expressed his sadness at not being able to save his beloved club from relegation and empathises with all of the Betis fans.
“One always thinks they can save the club. In this past three months, I always thought I could and I’m very sad because I know how the fans feel.
“I came to stand up for a loved one. The relegation is a result of a very bad year and now, more than ever, all of Betis must be more united than ever and to leave behind personal interests to make a team fit for the Primera because the fans are made for the Primera.
“We have the obligation to these fans to stay up, who are extraordinary, as they were today.
“The team was competitive until the last week against Rayo, but our own mistake and other situations that were out of our control, prevented us from being where we wanted to be.
