Real Sociedad defender Íñigo Martínez admits he’s not set his thoughts on the possibility of heading to the World Cup with Spain yet, preferring to focus on finishing the season well with his club. Meanwhile, his side could confirm the relegation of Real Betis on Saturday, if they take the three points at the Benito Villamarín.
Even though Real Betis seemed doomed to their fate of relegation from the Primera, ahead of this Saturday’s encounter at the Benito Villamarín, Real Sociedad defender Íñigo Martínez pointed out that whilst it’s not yet mathematical, he knows they’ll be trying their best to beat his team.
“It’s not going to be easy, because although they’re practically relegated, they’re not going to be giving it up as a fact. They’ll be throwing everything at us and will keep trying. They’re not going to give up, we’re clear about that.”
Though Íñigo admitted a certain level of sympathy for the plight of Real Betis and their players, he was also keen to point out that though there will be respect for their opponents, his own team have a job to do and they’ll also be looking for the three points.
“Nobody likes being relegated and seeing what’s happening there isn’t nice. If we win, we’ll give our encouragement to our opponents at the end of the game. We’ll have to do our own jobs first though, to do the best we can and then later, they’ll have all our support and encouragement.”
“Obviously we have to give them our respect, but we’re all looking after our own interests. With all respects, we want to win and we’re aware that playing with their situation, it will be a key aspect of the game.”
Looking at what remains of the season, Íñigo also feels strongly that his team can still secure a fifth place finish, noting that they have four games left that all present opportunities to win three points on each occasion.
“Nothing is impossible. What matters is that we keep going until the end. If we have the option of finishing fifth, perfect and we’ll we’ll fight hard for it. If we don’t finish fifth, it won’t be for the lack of trying, or our aim of bringing every joy possible to our fans. We have winnable games and I’d prefer to be playing against the opponents we have, rather than the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona. We can win these games and finish the season as high in La Liga as possible.”
As for his hopes of making the Spain squad for the World Cup in Brazil, Íñigo suggested that he’s focused on his team right now and whilst obviously keen to go, it won’t be the end of the world if he doesn’t.
“There’s not much left of the season now, things are very difficult. I’ll keep looking after myself, which is what matters, helping to bring wins for my team. I’ve not been giving it much thought. If it happens, perfect and if not, I’ll be supporting the team from home.”
