Real Betis winger Álvaro Vadillo is convinced that the sacking of former manager Pepe Mel, was a hasty move that will ultimately prove to have been a huge mistake, with the club seemingly destined for relegation to the Segunda.
Holding a press call following training on Wednesday, talented young winger Álvaro Vadillo first spoke about the chances of his team avoiding relegation, adding that poor refereeing decisions have hardly helped matters, though noting that the team haven’t done enough things well enough, to deserve being anywhere other than in the relegation zone.
“Whilst it’s still mathematically possible, we’ll keep trying. There referees sometimes prejudice things against us and sometimes their beneficial. It’s a fact that our last game was taken away from us, because a refereeing mistake threw all our work overboard, but we can’t make excuses, as we also deserve to be where we are.”
Vadillo also expressed his appreciation, for another good turnout of fans to watch the team train, lending their vocal support.
“It’s nothing new, because the fans are always there backing us and it’s appreciated. We talk in the locker room about it and the sentiment is something we’re really grateful for.”
As for where his own future lies, Vadillo assured that relegation or not, he’s happy to stay at Betis, though it’s the club who will ultimately decide whether to keep him or cash in on the wealth of interest.
“I’ve already said before that Betis are my first option, be it in the Primera or in the Segunda and it’s the club who will decide, though my decision is to stay here.”
Returning to the theme of their current situation and stood on the precipice of relegation, Vadillo was asked if the club had made the wrong decision, sacking Pepe Mel.
“Yes, because he knew all the players, we were happy with him and we could have got ourselves out of this.”
This season in La Liga has clearly been a disaster as far as everyone is concerned, with Vadillo admitting that everything seems to have gone wrong, including in no small part, their own performances through the course of the season.
“When things go badly, they go badly in every sense. If it’s not injuries, it’s because of the referees, or because of our own mistakes.”
Vadillo did admit surprise that what he considers such a quality squad, still find themselves bottom of La Liga.
“The fact is, if you look at each and every player, one by one, this isn’t a squad that should be last. We’re surprised because during pre-season, we were at a great level.”
