Real Betis manager Gabriel Calderón underlined that his side have absolutely no alternative, they must win the city derby against Sevilla, if they’re to keep any hopes of survival in the Primera alive.
Real Betis manager wants his side to win the derby against Sevilla for the fans.
Speaking ahead of the Saturday morning training session, Gabriel Calderón was asked if winning the derby against Sevilla, would give his team continued belief they can still climb out of the relegation zone.
“We’re taking things one game at a time, because if we win tomorrow and we don’t win our next game, it’s all the same in the end. We have to win tomorrow because it’s our obligation, because it’s a derby and because we are where we are. After what’s happened in previous derbies and out elimination in the Europa League, we really want to win this derby.”
As for his own future as manager of Real Betis, Calderón insisted that he hasn’t thought beyond the end of the season, just about the job he came here to do in the first place.
“Since I came here I have never thought about 30th June. If I was thinking about myself, I wouldn’t have come here. I came here to die for Betis, if I have to. I’ve not thought about that date. I’m only thinking about the six finals that remain, the most important of which is the game tomorrow. All of us who are Beticos, want to win the derby more than anything else.”
Looking at opponents Sevilla, Calderón was impressed with their performance against FC Porto on Thursday night, but assured that his team are well prepared and know the task they must confront.
“They looked very good on Thursday, they rolled over Porto and won deservedly. We can’t go out there waiting to see what Sevilla do. We’re going out there to win the game. They’re a very hard-working team and they have fresh players, so they’ll be fine in that respect. When Sevilla push forward, we’re prepared to defend. They’re a strong team, but we know what we have to do.”
Questioned if he fears a Sevilla side in such excellent form of late, Calderón insisted he has full confidence in his players.
“I don’t fear anything. We’re going out there to win against a great team. We played them here in the Europa League and they beat us 0-2. They were already in good form then. I’m convinced that my team will play at the level they need to.”
Calderón also has belief that the fans at the Benito Villamarín, will be in full voice, backing his team.
“We want to bring some joy to our fans and that will come by winning this derby. That is our duty. The fans have suffered a great deal, but they’ve always responded.”
“I have nothing to ask of the fans, as they’ve always given us everything. I have the utmost respect for everything they do. They’re always there. Tomorrow I’m sure they’ll be helping the team. We can only thank the fans.”
