If you're like me, you probably spent part of the weekend on the Marca website: "Osasuna equalise against Real Sociedad - damn!"... "Getafe winning away at Valencia - seriously?!" But actually the fact of the matter is that other teams' results don't change the basic equation: Betis have somehow to get themselves on to 38 points to have a sniff of staying up. That's 16 points from eight games, one of which is Barcelona away. Whichever way you look at it, if we don't beat Málaga tonight our chances of survival will be somewhere between slim and nil.
The good news is that Gaby Calderón's team has been playing consistently well for about the last six weeks now, and Málaga don't present the stiffest opposition in the world. It's true that they've won their last two away games, and in Willy Caballero they have one of the league's stand-out goalkeepers, but they're still not out of relegation trouble themselves and the fact that our old friend Roque Santa Cruz is still leading their forward line tells its own story.
For Betis the big problem right now is injuries. The complete list of players out, as far as I can remember, is: Amaya, Perquis, Dídac, Nacho, Salva Sevilla, Nosa, Chuli, Caro and Xavi Torres. In addition, Paulao has a fitness test today and Verdú hasn't played for a couple of months. As old-time English managers would say, we're down to the bare bones.
Thankfully, however, we can still count on most of our key forwards and the word seems to be that Calderón is going to go all out from the start, with Rubén, Baptistao and Molina apparently likely to start together. With Vadillo also showing signs of running into some form last Thursday, this might be enough to overwhelm a battle-hardened Málaga defence.
The game is at a crazy time again, and the weather forecast isn't great either, but a €5 ticket offer and the importance of the game have seen queues at the ticket office all weekend. After Thursday's win at Levante, Béticos feel there's a faint whiff of a miracle in the air - but that all depends on the side picking up three points today. It promises to be a nerve-wracking night.
