What I remember about the first meeting of the teams this season is that I had never been so sure before a game that Betis would lose. Sadly, I was right, too. I wish I could be more optimistic today, but I'm afraid it's not easy. Past the half-hour mark and with neither side having been able to take a firm grip of the game, frustrations started to surface. The intensity and effort was still very much evident from both sets of players, but rash challenges and arguments were also threatening to make things boil over. Atlético finished the half looking the stronger side and although they were able to win corners, they weren’t able to break the Betis defence from their set-pieces.

Out for the second half, still the signs were clear that it was going to be another end to end forty-five minutes. After an Atlético attack was broken down by tight defending from the Betis rearguard, the home side sprang forth on the counter in the 47th minute. Molina pinged his pass through the gap in the visiting defence, but Juan Carlos couldn’t quite make the desired contact, in what was a great opening.

Atlético had defending to do, but they remained robust and resolute, as Betis sought to pile on the pressure. Both sides were scrapping for every ball, every challenge and any way to get an edge. There was no let up in the intensity on display.

Life would be made all the more difficult for Betis however, when in the 55th minute, Braian Rodríguez collected his second yellow card. A poorly timed challenge and no doubts, whilst his side now had to battle for more than thirty minutes, with a man less.

That was just the advantage that Atlético needed and showing absolutely no mercy, they took the lead in the 57th minute. Gabi collecting the ball just outside the area and wasting no time at all, smashing a superb finish past Adán. They should have had a rapid second two moments later, as Diego Costa found himself in good space inside the Betis area, but chose to look for a pass, rather than the shot himself. Now ahead though, Simeone made his first move from the bench, introducing Diego Ribas for Raúl García in the 59th minute.

Atlético continued to pile on the pressure and when Koke slipped a lovely ball through to Diego Costa, he found himself completely free and with just Adán to beat in the 63rd minute, fired in the second for the visitors.

More movements from the bench, as Atlético sent on David Villa for Arda Turan. That was followed in the 69th minute with a change for an utterly demoralised looking Betis, as Cedrick replaced Juan Carlos.

Betis were forced to keep defending, against an Atlético side in complete control, looking for a third goal, but despite there advances, there was no real urgency now from the visitors, more patient with their play. Matilla replaced Lolo Reyes for the home side in the 74th minute, as Calderón made his final change for the home side.

David Villa couldn’t make the most of a good opportunity, as he received the ball inside the area in the 80th minute, but lost control and a chance of the Atlético third. That was soon followed by the final change from the bench in the 82nd minute, as Simeone replaced Koke with José Sosa.

Trying to restore some pride, Molina had a chance for Betis in the 84th minute, but his finish was woefully weak and easy for Courtois to claim. There was no longer any sting left in the game as the game headed into stoppage time and as the final whistle blew, more dismay for the suffering Betis fans at the Benito Villamarín, whilst Atlético Madrid temporarily sent themselves top of La Liga, ahead of El Clásico.

You know, I really try to not to be what they call here a "conspiranoico" and accuse referees of having it in for us as a matter of course, but there really is something different when Betis face the two big Madrid teams and Barcelona. For these games, you just have to accept that there are double standards in play - one rule for them, another for us. How else can you explain Braian Rodríguez picking up a second yellow card for a handball (that might well have been accidental), when minutes later an Atleti player committed exactly the same offence and was punished with a free-kick but no booking? And why can Diego Costa get away with the game's most malicious foul play - nudging Paulao into the advertising hoardings, which could have resulted in a serious injury - without so much as stern word? By the end, the Béticos had even given up calling the referee a "******" and were just laughing.

It's a shame, because until Braian was sent off, after 57 minutes, the match had been encouragingly tight. Betis made Atleti work for their few chances, even after Amaya had became the fourth first-half substitution in the last three games, and had at least one great opportunity themselves when Juan Carlos beat Courtois but saw his shot hit the outside of the post. The new partnership upfront of Braian and Molina - presumably to give Rubén a rest - wasn't exactly striking fear into the hearts of the Atlético centre-backs, but at least it seemed like Betis were giving as good as they got. But within seconds of us going down to 10 men the visitors had scored with a long-range shot and everyone in the stadium new it was pretty much all over. Then that nice Mr Costa doubled the lead with a messy goal soon afterwards and that really was curtains. The last 25 minutes was just tedious.

The plus points? Nono came on to a warm reception, which should help heal any psychological wounds, and the crowd never lost patience with the team, who they obviously felt were hard done-by, but the point that looked likely for more than half the game would definitely have been useful. Oh well; on to Levante on Thursday.
