  • Sevilla and Betis rivals gear up for Europa League derby

Sevilla and Real Betis players participated in a publicity event for the Cruzcampo Foundation on Tuesday, ahead of the hugely anticipated Europa League derby between the two sides.

The charitable foundation of local brewers Cruzcampo was the setting for a meeting of rivals on Tueaday, as players from both Sevilla and Real Betis took questions from fans attending the event, ahead of Thursday’s clash in the Europa League.

For Sevilla, Vicente Iborra and Diogo Figueiras and for Real Betis, Nacho and Joan Verdú, took questions that had been sent from fans of the two sides, via social network Twitter.

Iborra was first asked about his thoughts about the Europa League tie and what it means to be participating, in such a high profile encounter.

“It’s a great opportunity, the first time that the two teams face one another in a European tie. Aside from what it means to win a derby, there’s the added incentive of reaching the quarter finals of a European competition. It’s going to be important, it will be difficult, but for what it means, we’ll be giving everything we’ve got.

Diogo also enthused about the clash between the two sides, as well as the prospect of progressing in Europe.

“Both for ourselves, as well as the Betis players, this is going to be really good because we all want to get through to the quarter finals. Doing well in the Europa League is something we’re really enthusiastic about, but I’m sure it is for them to, but I’d be really happy for my team to get through.”

Nacho fielded the first questions on behalf of Real Betis, with the full-back responding to one posed, asking what matters most – La Liga or the Europa League.

“What I’d really like is for our team to stay in the Primera next season, with the fans supporting us as they have been now. If we can get through in the Europa League, then even better. It’s something historic for us all and of course, we want to get through.

Joan Verdú meanwhile, hopes that his team can produce a good performance and take a positive result in the first leg at the Sánchez-Pizjuan.

“It’s a very important game for us. We live with the enthusiasm of bringing joy to our fans. We know that we’ve got the second-leg to follow, but if we can score an away goal in the first-leg, then that’s always positive. This first-leg will be the most difficult part, but we’re going into it with a positive and winning mentality.
