Real Betis manager Gabriel Calderón was delighted with the efforts of his team, as they secured a 2-0 victory against Getafe, insisting that whilst there’s still a glimmer of hope they can avoid relegation, they’ll keep on battling.
Following the win against Getafe, Real Betis manager Gabriel Calderón explained that performances from his team have shown a marked improvement, since their away win in Russia.
“The dynamic has changed. Since the Europa League match against Rubin Kazan, we’re improving. We’re still lacking a great many things, but the sensations are good and the dynamic as well. We have to keep working hard, to keep improving.”
Asked if he thinks it’s possible for Betis to claw their way back to safety in La Liga, Calderón underlined that whilst it’s still a possibility, they’ll give it everything they’ve got.
“We’re taking things one game at a time. I’m not making any calculations, or anything like that. Next we play Sevilla, then we’ll start thinking about next Sunday’s game. Whilst it’s still mathematically possible though, we’ll keep believing.”
Getafe manager Luis García was angry that his side hadn’t been awarded a penalty. Calderón felt the referee made the right call.
“I didn’t see a penalty from my point of view and my players told me it wasn’t a penalty. In the replays you can see it, but the truth is that from my position, it didn’t look a penalty.”
The next challenge for Betis, is the European derby tie against city rivals, Sevilla. Asked if he’ll repeat the same eleven for that game, Calderón suggested that he won’t be tinkering too much with his team.
“At the moment we’re thinking about putting the best team out for our next game. Then we’ll see how the players have recovered for the next match in La Liga. Now we have five days to recover. There’s no need to rotate the team. If the players are all fine, then we might see about one or two changes, but we don’t need to change the team much.”
Asked if the improvement in performances have come more from morale than ability, Calderón believes his side have made good progress in a number of areas, not just psychologically.
“They’ve improved in many aspects. We’re progressing as a team that knows how to compete, that works hard in games and can suffer. It’s 150% merit to the players. I see them working during the week and all the sacrifices they make during games. They deserved this and I’m happy for them.”
When prompted for thoughts about just how important the derby is against Sevilla on Thursday, Calderón couldn’t understate just how crucial every game is for his team and the fans.
“It’s of the utmost importance. Every game for Betis is a final. We all want to win every game, regardless of what competition it is. We must always compete, so that the fans are happy.”
Baptistao finally opened his account, which was pleasing for Calderón, as well as the continued attacking performances of talismanic striker, Rubén Castro.
“I’m very happy that Leo scored. That’s all he was missing and us too. He was really keen to get that goal and Rubén Castro remains extraordinary, with his consistency of goals.”
