Calderón: There are never any favourites in derbies
Real Betis manager Gabriel Calderón has spoken about the upcoming Sevillano derby games in the Europa League, confident that his side won’t be on the receiving end of a thrashing, when they play the first leg at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
Gabriel CalderónIn just ten days time, Sevilla and Real Betis will lock horns in a Sevillano derby, with the added spice of it taking place in the Europa League.
On the domestic stage however, the fortunes of Real Betis when they’ve last visited the Sánchez-Pizjuán, have been far from happy occasions. This season they were soundly thrashed 4-0, whilst last season they fared no better, falling to a humiliating 5-1 defeat.
Speaking with Radio Marca on Monday however, Betis manager Gabriel Calderón was asked if at this stage, there are any concerns or anxiety ahead of the encounter on Thursday 13th March, given the disastrous last two visits to the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
“I have no concerns, but I won’t know until the time of the game, what the attitude of my players is like. We have an important collective job to do. What we’re looking for, is that something like what happened at Valencia, doesn’t happen again, though I no longer have the impression that we can concede five again.”
Calderón also believes that the respective league positions of the two teams, with his own still rooted firmly to the bottom of La Liga, will have any bearing whatsoever, on the outcome of the Europa League tie with Sevilla.
“For their position in La Liga, they would appear to be favourites, but in derbies there are never any favourites. I have complete confidence in my team for this game, or any other. I’m certain that Betis will rise to the occasion.”
Asked about how he’s planning for the two games, Calderón simply explained that it’s with a winning mentality.
“Every game is there to be won. I always want to win. We’ll defend the same against Sevilla as we did against the Russians. You always want to make some changes beforehand though, in case you’ve missed something better to utilise.”
