Real Betis president Miguel Guillén complained about the poor refereeing decisions of Gil Manzano during the defeat against Athletic Club Bilbao, whilst the club have posted a YouTube video to highlight the match official’s errors.
Miguel GuillénAfter suffering a 0-2 defeat at home against Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday, Real Betis players and officials were furious about punishing decisions against them, by match referee Gil Manzano.
In particular, three incidents. A penalty that wasn’t awarded when Rubén Castro appeared to be fouled inside the area. A penalty awarded against them that was outside the area. A penalty that wasn’t awarded when an Athletic player appeared to handle the ball on his goal line.
On Monday, the club published the following video via YouTube, to highlight those “mistakes” by the referee.

As well as the video, Real Betis president Miguel Guillén also spoke with radio network Cadena Sur show ‘El Larguero’, about words he’d had with the referee after the game and his dismay at the mistakes that had gone against his team.
“I told him, politely, that we’ve all seen them. Not just the Beticos in the stadium, but the rest of Spain on television, that unfortunately the refereeing actions have been lamentable from every point of view.”
“The task of the referees is difficult, but we simply cannot understand when a team of referees can be wrong in the one direction, without using the same references to punish plays that occur on either side.”
Whilst acknowledging Betis have suffered for their own mistakes this season, Guillén also believes referees should also be scrutinised more for the mistakes they make, insisting that he will take his complaints as far as he can.
“We’re in the situation we’re in because of our own mistakes. What I don’t understand however, is that when refereeing mistakes like this happen, as well as being beaten, we’re expected to remain quiet about them.”
“I have conveyed that their actions were lamentable, if they can fail in so many actions and some of them practically the same for one team compared to the other, and they penalise one different to the other, I feel I have the right to express that, politely.”
“It shows an inability from a team of professionals to do their job correctly. I represent a very big club, with an important group of fans and I think I have to convey what we have seen.”
