Real Betis’ Nigerian midfielder, Nosa Igiebor recently admitted that it was only when he joined the Andalusian club in 2012 did he realise the extent of racism in football and questions why fans feel it necessary to use racism against players.
In an interview with the BBC, Nosa revealed how he came into contact with racism, after playing most of his career in Africa, later moving to Norway and Israel before joining Betis, where he first experienced racist chants.
“Why do they have to call me black or monkey? Since I arrived here, I’ve discovered that there is racism in football.”
However, Nosa defended his club and despite being close to relegation, the 23-year-old feels Betis is a huge club.
“Although were not in a good place in the league table, Betis is a great club with extraordinary fans. When they told me that Betis was going to sign me, I was jumping for joy.”
