  • Rubén Castro: I will stay at Betis, even in the Segunda

Real Betis striker Rubén Castro has assured that even if his team suffers relegation to the Segunda, his intention is tostay and help them return to the Primera.

There are plenty of dark clouds hovering above the Benito Villamarin these days, especially with the threat of a seemingly unavoidable relegation from the Primera, looking to be a foregone conclusion to a disastrous season in La Liga.

A silver lining to one cloud, amidst fears that countless players would jump ship, if or perhaps when Betis are relegated, is the insistence of talismanic striker Rubén Castro that he will stay at the club, during an interview with Cadena SER Radio Sevilla.

“Of course I’ll play with Betis in the Segunda. I will stay at Betis, I’m staying here. Although my salary will be reduced, I intend to stay. We haven’t done things as well as we should, but we have to take care of this club.”

Reflecting on how poorly things have gone for Real Betis in La Liga this season, the 32-year-old admitted that each defeat and each goal conceded have knocked the wind out of their sails when it comes to morale, but insisted that they will keep fighting for as long as they can.

“We’ve wanted to do better, but we haven’t been able to. We’re always making things difficult for ourselves. Every time we concede a goal, we drop our heads and that makes things even worse. We have a great team and superb fans who fill the stadium, so we’ll keep trying. Nobody can forget the numbers, but we can’t think about the points that remain, just that we need to string a couple of wins together.”

Real Betis fans group Supporters Gol Sur have announced that they will boycott the Europa League game against Rubin Kazan on Thursday night, to which the striker suggested he was sympathetic towards their anger and frustration, accepting that the players should bear much of the responsibility for being bottom of La Liga.

“We did a great job getting into the Europa League last season and that can’t be sniffed at, but the fans have every right to protest and be angry. It’s only natural and even good that they are, because they just want the team to win. All of the players, we’re all responsible for the situation the team is in and we have to show our faces.”

Finally, Rubén Castro confirmed what was already very obvious at the time, that he didn’t get on with Juan Carlos Garrido during his brief tenure as manager, but feels much more comfortable with current boss, Gabriel Calderón.

“When Garrido was here I was still struggling with discomfort, the injury was annoying me, but yes, it’s true that I feel better with Calderón than Garrido. Gabi talks with me more and gives me more freedom on the pitch.”
