Real Betis midfielder José Antonio Delgado Villar, more commonly known simply as ‘Nono’, has underlined that his team must bounce back with a victory away at Granada on Sunday, following the 5-0 thrashing at Valencia last weekend, which put a severe dent in their revival ambitions.
Real Betis midfielder Nono stressed the urgent need for victory at Granada this weekend.
Central midfielder Nono is well aware of the urgent need for points, with Real Betis still seemingly glued to the bottom of La Liga, especially after the setback and thrashing last weekend at Valencia. This weekend presents another opportunity for his team to change their fortunes for the better and one that he hopes they don’t miss, when they travel to take on Granada away at Nuevo Los Cármenes on Sunday lunchtime.
“We couldn’t take a victory from Valencia, so we’re hoping that this week we can take a good result to gain confidence and so we can keep working hard.”
“We’re working hard to be in the best possible shape for this next game. Granada are direct rivals, one of the nearest teams we have to ourselves. We want to win the game to gain the morale we need.”
Looking at opponents Granada, Nono observed that they too have been struggling of late, which will mean that they will prove difficult opponents who are looking to prove their worth to their own home fans.
“They’re near the fringes of the relegation zone. They’re playing at home and in front of their own fans, so they’ll be giving it everything. They also need the points to put themselves in a calmer situation. It will be a tough game, but we hope we’re up to the challenge.”
Asked about the pressure on the team to turn their situation around, Nono acknowledged that it’s there and that they simply have to deal with it.
“The team is under the sort of pressure that’s only to be expected. If we were in any other situation, there wouldn’t be so much anxiety.”
There will clearly be even more pressure on the shoulders of the Real Betis players, if they don’t secure the three points on Sunday. Asked if another defeat would effectively signal their goodbye to the Primera, Nono accepted that whilst it will make their situation more difficult, they’ll be busting a gut to make sure they don’t suffer any further setbacks.
“We wouldn’t be saying goodbye to the Primera, but it would put us in even more of a complicated situation. There’s still lots of points to play for and we still have hope. We want to cling on to our status in the Primera. We must fight to the death in this next game, to start pushing ourselves ahead.”
With the suggestion that opposing teams see playing Real Betis as almost a guarantee that they can win three points, Nono admitted that it’s hurtful that they’re viewed in such a away.
“Nobody likes being in the situation we’re in. None of the players are enjoying it, that’s for sure. It hurts me knowing that opponents feel that way and it does my team-mates too. We have to stand up and be counted wherever we go. For our fans, we have to stand up to our opponents however we can.”
