Betis add Baptistao, Adán and N’Diaye to their Europa League squad
Real Betis have submitted their Europa League squad for the knock-out stage of the tournament, with their three January signings, to bolster their hopes of progress in the competition.
Gabriel Calderón has submitted the required changes to his Europa League squad, with the final list submitted to UEFA on Monday. Only three changes are permitted to the squad that was named last summer, therefore the options available though straightforward, were fairly limited.
Goalkeeper Andersen, who left on loan and defender Steinhöfer, who left permanently during the January transfer window, vacated two places. Xavi Torres, who suffered a serious achilles tendon injury in December, also drops out of the list, as he won’t be available to play until the very end of the season, at the earliest.
Given those three vacancies and as part of the appeal during their respective transfer negotiations, the three news signings Betis completed over the January transfer window, make the squad. Alfred N’Diaye and Antonio Adán were straightforward choices, whilst although there were initial concerns that Leo Baptistao might not feature, having competed in the Champions League for Atlético Madrid, recent changes in UEFA regulations now permit the Brazilian forward to be included.
Real Betis face a stern test in the last 32 stage of the Europa League, where they will face Russian outfit Rubin Kazan. The potential reward for passage to the last 16 couldn’t be more of an incentive however, with the prospect of a derby against Sevilla, if their city rivals can also negotiate their way past Slovenian side, Maribor.
